The flapper valve assembly can be used in series to provide collapsible closures in a drill pipe. Thus, when work strings are withdrawn through the flapper valve, it will close in a conventional manner. However, when the work string must be reinserted through the closed flapper, a collar holding the flapper in its closed position can be sheared from its position within the assembly housing.

A linear indexing apparatus and associated methods of using same provide convenient operation of tools in a subterranean wellbore. In a preferred embodiment, a linear indexing apparatus has an outer tubular housing and a tubular mandrel axially slidably disposed within the housing. Two sets of slips are utilized to incrementally displace the mandrel relative to the housing. A piston associated with one of the sets of slips permits the mandrel to be incrementally indexed in response to a series of repeated applications of a predetermined differential pressure.

Linear indexing apparatus and methods of using same

A tubing retrievable surface controlled subsurface safety valve 106 is adapted to be positioned in a well tubing string 102 to control the flow through the tubing string. The safety valve includes an annular housing or body 200 defining a fluid passageway through which fluids and/or gasses may flow to the surface. The safety valve is equipped with a valve closure member such as flapper 252, positioned in the fluid passageway which is moveable between an open and closed position. The valve closure member is engaged and actuated by a longitudinally extending operator 242 that engages the valve closure member 252. In one embodiment, the longitudinally extending operator 242 may be a tubular member longitudinally moveable within the valve body. The longitudinally extending member 242 is operatively coupled to a spring guide 226. A biasing spring 222 is positioned in a spring chamber 120 defined by a spring housing 228 and the spring guide 226. A spring 256 biases the closure member 252 in the closed position. A balance line 114 extending from the surface is connected to a balance pressure conduit 118 that is in fluid communication with the spring chamber 120 to balance the hydrostatic pressure from the control line 112. The spring chamber 120 is isolated from well pressure at the top and bottom therefore the pressure applied to the spring chamber 120 through the balance pressure line via the balance pressure conduit 118 counteracts the hydrostatic head of the fluid in the control line or lines, thereby enabling the subsurface safety valve 106 to operate at vary depths.

A plug is provided which is specially adapted for statically setting a plug portion within an internal profile formed in a wellhead. In an illustrated preferred embodiment, the plug portion is set by application of fluid pressure to a running tool portion. When set in the profile, the plug portion is secured statically relative to the profile, thereby permitting advantageous utilization of a metal-to-metal seal on the plug portion. The plug portion includes features which maintain its set configuration in the profile. The running tool portion includes multiple pistons which enhance operation of the running tool portion. A disclosed verification tool provides an indication that the plug portion has been properly set.

A subsurface safety valve has a valve seat and an upwardly closing flapper plate whose sealing surfaces each have a matched spherical radius of curvature. The sealing surface of the valve seat is a concave spherical segment and the sealing surface of the flapper plate is a convex spherical segment. The matching spherical surfaces are lapped together to provide a metal-to-metal seal along the interface between the nested convex and concave sealing surfaces. This permits angular displacement of the flapper plate relative to the valve seat without interrupting positive sealing engagement. The concave spherical seating surface of the safety valve seat will tolerate a limited amount of misalignment of the flapper plate which sometimes occurs during operation of the safety valve under high flow rate, high differential pressure conditions.

Streamlined flapper valve

A safety system including a surface controlled subsurface safety valves for use in a well having annulus fluid flow. One of the safety valves has a valve closure member, and a small diameter offset piston actuator to move the valve closure member in response to control fluid pressure conducted from the well surface to its open position which allows annulus fluid flow. A spring biases the valve closure member to block annulus fluid flow. The annulus safety valve has an enlarged flow area for use in high volume gas injection wells. The annulus safety valve has metal-to-metal sealing systems to improve valve life under harsh downhole well environments.

A tubing retrievable safety valve, lockout tool and method of use are disclosed that are adapted to lock the valve open permanently and provide access to control line pressure by perforating the piston in the valve. The lockout tool comprises a track mandrel having a ramp slidably disposed beneath a punch that is adapted to penetrate the piston wall of the valve at a point adjacent to the control fluid annulus, thereby creating a protrusion adapted to lock the valve open and establishing fluid communication between the control fluid annulus and the valve bore.

Perforating type lockout tool

A valve employing a coupling disk to rotate the valve member so that rotative force is applied to the valve member in a direction away from the seat during opening of the valve and/or in a direction toward the seat during closing of the valve. Closing force is provided by a spring in a dome chamber and a gas charge in the dome chamber. A float valve controls fluid entry into the dome chamber to trap the gas charge therein while permitting the introduction of liquid from a balance-closure assist line to increase the pressure of the gas charge and assist in closing the valve member.

An improved lockout housing (48) and lockout sleeve (46) for a tubing retrievable safety valve (36) having cooperating lugs and lug recesses that are adapted to reduce the likelihood of premature shearing or leaking. Sets of circumferentially spaced, shearable retaining lugs (64) are alternated with sets of circumferentially spaced, shearable communicating lugs (54) that extend radially inward around the upper portion of lockout housing (48) and are preferably unitarily formed as an integral part of the lockout housing (48). First and second sets of longitudinally extending slots (62, 66) are likewise circumferentially spaced around the lower end of outside wall (68) of lockout sleeve (46), and are adapted to slidably engage the longitudinally aligned lugs (54, 64) of the lockout housing. Slots (62) aligned longitudinally with communicating lugs (54) are preferably longer than slots (66) aligned with the retaining lugs (64), and extend a greater distance up outside wall (68) of lockout sleeve (46). Retaining lugs (64) of lockout housing (48) retain lockout sleeve (46) in its upper position relative to lockout housing (48), and shoulders (56) of slots (62) aligned with communicating lugs (54) do not contact communicating lugs (54) of lockout housing (48) until retaining lugs (64) are sheared.
