Tertiary amine catalysts having isocyanate reactive groups that are capable of forming thermally stable covalent bonds able to withstand temperatures up to 120&#xb0; C. are disclosed. These catalyst can be used to produce polyurethane foam having the following desirable characteristics: a) very low chemical emissions over a wide range of environmental conditions and isocyanate indexes (e.g., indexes as low as 65 but higher than 60) while meeting all physical property requirements; b) sufficient hydrolytic stability to maintain the catalyst covalently bound to foam without leaching of tertiary amine catalyst when foam is exposed to water or aqueous solutions even at temperatures higher than ambient (temperature range 25&#xb0; C. to 90&#xb0; C.); and c) stable contact interface between the polyurethane polymer and other polymers (for example polycarbonate) with minimal migration of tertiary amine catalyst from polyurethane polymer to other polymers yielding no noticeable polymer deterioration at the point of contact even under conditions of heat and humidity.

Amine composition useful for making polyurethane foam

Additives for making polyurethanes are disclosed. The additives are based on combining specific carboxylic acids or carboxylic di-acids together with a gelling catalysts obtained when mixing an isocyanate-reactive tertiary amine catalysts with dimethyl tin di carboxylate salts and/or dimethyltin mercaptide salts.

Disclosed are a process of producing a polyurethane foam product, a polyurethane foam product pre-mix, polyurethane foam product formulation, and a polyurethane foam product. The process of producing the polyurethane foam product includes contacting a halohydrin component with a polyurethane foam product pre-mix. The polyurethane foam product pre-mix includes the halohydrin component. The polyurethane foam product formulation includes a polyol component, an isocyanate component, and a halohydrin component. The polyurethane foam product is formed by the pre-mix having the halohydrin component.

Polyurethane foam compositions and processes to make flexible polyurethane foams are disclosed. Polyurethane foam is produced in the presence of additives comprising guanidine derivatives. Improvements in physical properties such as air flow, dimensional stability, tensile, tear, elongation and foam hardness is observed when these additives are present in polyurethane formulations. In addition, these additives can minimize polymer degradation under humid ageing conditions resulting in foam products with better mechanical properties.

This disclosure is directed to make low density and low amine emissions water blown polyurethane foams using a reactive catalyst composition. The method is particularly useful in the preparation of full water blown, low density polyurethane foams having a density in the range of about 6 to about 16 kg/m3. A catalyst composition comprising at least one non-emissive amine catalyst and tetraalkyl guanidine, the method of employing the catalyst composition and a formulation comprising the catalyst composition are disclosed.

A composition and process useful to make flexible polyurethane foams and in particular flexible molded polyurethane foams is disclosed. The usage of dipolar aprotic liquids such as DMSO, DMI, sulfolane, N-methyl-acetoacetamide, N,N-dimethylacetoacetamide as well as glycols containing hydroxyl numbers OH#&#x2264;1100 as cell opening aides for 2-cyanoacetamide or other similar molecules containing active methylene or methine groups to make a polyurethane foam is also disclosed. The advantage of using cell opener aids results in a) no foam shrinkage; b) lower use levels of cell opener; c) foam performance reproducibility d) optimum physical properties. In addition, combining the acid blocked amine catalyst together with the cell opener and the cell opener aid results in a less corrosive mixture as well as provides a method that does not require mechanical crushing for cell opening.

Catalyst compositions useful in the production of insulating polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam are disclosed. The catalyst compositions impart increased stability of a mixture of the catalyst, a halogen-containing blowing agent, and a polyol. These catalyst compositions include amine/acid salts with a pH of &#x3c;7.0 which can be used in combined with tertiary amine catalysts and metal-based or ammonium-based trimerization catalyst and at least one metal-based gel catalyst and optionally one or more of an additional catalyst described in (1) or (2). These improved catalysts can be used with any halogenated blowing agent, and provide substantial stability benefits with the use of hydrofluoroolefins and hydrofluorochloroolefins. In an exemplary embodiment, a process includes providing a pre-mix comprising an organic carboxylic di-acid, tri-acid or poly-acid component and contacting a tetraalkylguanidine and/or a tertiary amine containing an isocyanate reactive group with the acid component in the pre-mix to form a mixture of tetraalkylguanidine salt or tertiary amine salt or their combination.

Delay action catalyst for improving the stability of polyurethane systems having halogen containing blowing agents

Catalyst compositions useful in the production of low or no amine emission flexible polyurethane foam as well as rigid insulating polyurethane foam produced with systems containing polyether, polyester, Mannich polyols as well as organic-halogen containing flame retardants and blowing agents, are disclosed. The catalysts are characterized by the presence of amine compositions containing unsaturated aliphatic substituent together with secondary hydroxyl groups able to bind to polyurethane polymers and render a low odor and no or low amine emissions finished product.
