An online storage system receives a plurality of documents to be stored in a directory. The storage system stores document data from each document in a document database. The storage system generates an entry for each document in an entry table and indexes the documents stored in the directory. The storage system samples a subset of the plurality of documents assigned to the directory in a directory index to determine a sampled subset of the plurality of documents. The storage system indexes the sampled subset in a directory index. The storage system can receive a request, from a client device, to view the indexed documents in the directory. Responsive to the request, the storage system presents the indexed documents in the directory retrieved from the directory index.

Indexing documents in a nested hierarchy of directories

Some embodiments of the present invention include a method comprising: accessing units of network storage that encode state data of respective virtual machines, wherein the state data for respective ones of the virtual machines are stored in distinct ones of the network storage units such that the state data for more than one virtual machine are not commingled in any one of the network storage units.

Storage architecture for virtual machines

The data of an online system is distributed over a number of different physical servers and databases on those servers. The online system shards the data to increase system scalability and replicates the shards to increase data reliability. Features such as sharding and replication in turn increase data storage system complexity. Accordingly, in order to provide simplified data storage semantics to applications that use the online system, the online system provides access to data via asynchronous callback functions that are triggered once data has been written and is available for reading by client code. Thus, applications need only specify code to be used in response to data write events, and can thereafter interact with the online system data using a data-driven paradigm.

Asynchronous notifications for a datastore of a distributed system

One embodiment of the present invention is a method including: (a) representing virtual primary disk data and state data of a virtual machine in a unit of storage; (b) exposing the virtual primary disk data of the virtual machine to a guest of the virtual machine to allow the guest to access the virtual primary disk data; and (c) preventing the guest from accessing the state data for the virtual machine.

Securing virtual machine data

A virtualized computer platform is established and maintained by virtualization software on one or more physical computers. A multicomponent software application may execute on the virtualized computer platform, with different components of the application executing in different virtual machines, which are supported by the virtualization software. The virtualization software may also provide the provision of one or more services that may be beneficial to the operation of the multicomponent software application, such as automated provisioning, resource allocation, VM distribution, performance monitoring, resource management, high availability, backup, disaster recovery, alarms, security, etc. In some embodiments of the invention, some of these services are provided through coordinated efforts of a system resource manager, a VM manager, an application monitor and an application resource manager. In some of these embodiments, an application monitor and an application manager may be included with a multicomponent software application in a single installation package.

Modifying resource allocation among pools supporting a VM set executing a multicomponent software application including nested components

A configuration deployment system stores configuration settings for a plurality of applications disposed at one or more computing hosts. The configuration settings are stored in a versioned repository and are organized in a hierarchical namespace structure. To deploy the configuration settings, a deployment service monitors the configuration settings at the configuration repository and identifies when a new configuration setting or a new version of an existing configuration setting is available in the configuration repository. The new configuration setting is transmitted to a computing device for use in an application. The application applies the changed configuration setting upon verifying that the change is compatible with the application.

Configuration updates of distributed applications

A system and method for operating a device for use with transport services is described. A record for a transport service is stored in a memory resource of the device. During performance of the transport service, the record is periodically updated with sets of information determined in connection with performance of the transport service at different instances in time, and the sets of information are periodically transmitted to a service system. In response to detecting a loss of network connectivity with the service system during performance of the transport service, the record is continued to be periodically updated but the sets of information are not periodically transmitted to the transport service system. Upon reestablishing network connectivity, one or more sets of information determined in connection with performance of the transport service during the loss of network connectivity is transmitted to the service system.

Maintaining data for use with a transport service during connectivity loss between systems

Virtual machines may be configured in a complex computing environment having dependencies among themselves and on the virtualization platform they operate on. The present disclosure formalizes these dependencies by defining a component framework that enables a deployer to know about the dependencies at deployment time and allow the platform to ensure that all required dependencies are satisfied at runtime. Disclosed is a set of Open Virtualization Format (OVF) sections that allow an OVF package to express dependencies to services using OVF meta-data. At deployment time, those OVF sections allow the platform to recognize and honor those dependencies, and at runtime provide the virtual machines with appropriate configuration meta-data.

Component framework for deploying virtual machines using service provisioning information

A disclosed example method to aggregate resources in a cloud involves receiving a request for a resource at a first tenant application programming interface provider of an internal cloud service. The example method involves using a virtualization platform application programming interface client of the internal cloud service to access the resource when the resource is an internal resource. When the resource is an external resource, a tenant application programming interface client of the internal cloud service is used to send a second request for the resource to a second tenant application programming interface provider of an external cloud service.
