An intelligent electronic device with multiple functionalities that may include multiple secure accesses includes a sensor coupled with a processor. The sensor may sense electrical parameters in an electrical circuit and generate signals indicative of the electrical parameters for the processor. The processor may be configured to concurrently operate multiple intelligent electronic device functionalities. The intelligent electronic device functionalities may each include one or more functions. The functions within one of the intelligent electronic device functionalities may be mutually exclusive. Secure access to one or more of the intelligent electronic device functionalities may be enabled by entry of a user identification.

Power quality detection, monitoring, reporting, recording and communication in a revenue accuracy electrical power meter is disclosed. Transient events are detected by monitoring the wave shape of the electrical power and comparing deviations to a known threshold. Sags and Swells are detected by computing root mean square value over a rolling window and comparing the computed value with a known threshold. Harmonic frequencies and symmetrical components are quantified by a known algorithm and compared with a known threshold. Incoming waveforms are stored to memory. All recorded and computed data is moved to non-volatile storage via direct memory access transfer in the event that a power quality event jeopardizes the operating power of the meter. Further, the meter provides a power supply utilizing high and low capacitive storage banks to supply sufficient energy to survive short duration power quality events which jeopardize the meter's operating power.

An intelligent electronic device ('IED') includes at least one function module that performs a specified function or feature. The function module operates to perform a power management function in conjunction with IED. The IED operates with a one key code corresponding to the power management function. The key code operates to enable or disable the power management function.

The electronics includes at least transducers, an analog to digital converter and logic. A meter cover encloses the revenue meter. Communications of data to and from the revenue meter may be done via a fiber optic communications link.

A method and arrangement are disclosed for attaching one or more electrical bayonet-type blades to a circuit board with the bayonets being used to receive voltage and current signals from the electric circuit of an electrical meter. The arrangement includes a circuit board with at least one opening adapted to receive one blade. In addition, a sensor is coupled with the electric circuit to sense at least one electrical parameter from the circuit and generating a corresponding analog signal. A solder pad disposed on at least one surface of board surrounds the opening. Solder is applied around the electrically conducting bayonet on one surface of the circuit board and around the electrically conducting bayonet of the surface of the circuit board opposite to the solder pad.

A revenue meter includes electronics for measuring the delivery of electrical energy from an energy supplier to a consumer through an electric circuit. An interface link connects to the revenue meter. An I/O and communications device connects through the interface link to the revenue meter. The I/O and communications device may also connect to a second electric circuit. The I/O and communications device uses a serial interface to communicate with the revenue meter. The I/O and communications device provides one or more of analog inputs and outputs, digital inputs and outputs, and communications ports.

An intelligent electronic device (IED) is disclosed for managing, measuring and controlling the distribution of electric power. The IED includes an enclosure. The enclosure houses electrical circuitry and a transformer that includes windings. A resin is set within the enclosure. The resin electrically isolates the windings of the transformer from analog circuitry. A central processing unit is housed within the enclosure. The central processing unit is coupled to the analog circuitry and operative to calculate at least one power management function. At least one of a display and a communications interface is housed within the enclosure and coupled to the central processing unit.

A time synchronization device and method is provided for synchronizing an internal clock of the power monitor. The internal clock may be adjusted to a periodically stable frequency according to a calculated counting error. Also, a time of the internal clock may be synchronized to a universal time, the time of the internal clock advancing at a determined rate. The determined rate may be adjusted if the internal time differs from the universal time plus a processing time.

A method and apparatus for automatically controlling gain switching of a monitor. To automatically control gain switching, an electronic circuit splits an input channel into a plurality of gain channels. The plurality of gain channels are simultaneously sampled. Thereafter, the processor accesses a present buffer of a first gain channel. The present buffer contains a predetermined amount of samples which represent the input channel. Next, the processor determines whether at least one of the samples contained in the present buffer is saturated. If at least one of the samples is saturated, the processor selects an alternate gain channel. Otherwise, if none of the samples is saturated, the processor determines whether a previous buffer of the first gain channel is saturated. If none of the samples from the previous buffer are saturated, the DSP selects the first gain channel. Otherwise, the DSP selects the alternate gain channel. Thereafter, the samples are processed from more than one of the plurality of gain channels to calculate power parameters.
