Novel hydrophilic modified acrylic polymers, which are, in particular, hydrosoluble or hydrodispersible. These novel polymers contain, expressed in molar percentages, p % of units derived from an acrylic acid or ester, q % of units derived from an alkanolamine of said acid, r % of units derived from the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of the said acid, and s % of units derived from a vinylic monomer, p, q, r and s representing integers and being so selected that 1.ltoreq.p.ltoreq.99, O.ltoreq.q.ltoreq.96, O.ltoreq.r.ltoreq.99 and O.ltoreq.s.ltoreq.40, and the sum (p+q+r+s) is equal to 100.

Novel hydrophilic modified acrylic polymers, particularly hydrodispersible or hydrosoluble modified acrylic polymers, containing, expressed in molar percentages, p % units derived from an acrylic acid or ester, q % units derived from an alkanolamide of said acid, r % units derived from the alkanolammonium salt of said acid, and s % units derived from a vinyl monomer, wherein p, q, r, s represent integers so selected that 1.ltoreq.p.ltoreq.95, O.ltoreq.q.ltoreq.99, O.ltoreq.r.ltoreq.99 and O.ltoreq.s.ltoreq.40, the sum (p+q+r+s) being equal to 100, and q and r never being nil simultaneously.

Enzymes are fixed to cellulose containing 5 to 25% lignin to form an enzyme-cellulose complex by a process involving treating cellulose pieces with an alkaline solution to remove lignin on the surface of the pieces, treating the resultant cellulose pieces with a sulfochlorinating or a chlorinating agent in an excess of pyridine until sulfur and/or chlorine is combined with the cellulose, washing the sulfur and/or chlorine-containing cellulose pieces and treating the pieces with an aqueous enzyme solution to attach enzymes thereto. A very important application is preparation of a rennet-cellulose complex and using the complex for coagulating milk in making cheese.

Preparation of an enzyme-cellulose complex

A liquid-operated tubular shock-absorber capable of exerting an adjustable force, comprises two concentric tubes fixed one inside the other with a narrow annular spacing between their walls, and a piston provided with a spindle sliding in sealing-tight relationship in the inner tube to define two chambers therein; in the end regions the spacing between the tubes communicates with both chambers inside the inner tube to form a closed circuit which is filled with liquid. A needle valve for regulating the flow of liquid are provided. The shock-absorber is particularly useful in physical training as a very reliable exerciser which operates in both compression and traction.
