Provided herein is a method, including forming a first template including a first pattern, wherein forming the first template includes self-assembly of diblock copolymers guided by an initial pattern; forming a second template including a second pattern, wherein the second pattern corresponds to a servo pattern; and forming a master template from the first template, wherein the master template includes one or more portions of the first pattern combined with the second pattern.

Provided herein is a method, including a) transferring an initial pattern of an initial template to a substrate; b) performing block copolymer self-assembly over the substrate with a density multiplication factor k; c) creating a subsequent pattern in a subsequent template with the density multiplication factor k; and d) repeating steps a)-c) with the subsequent template as the initial template until a design specification for the subsequent pattern with respect to pattern density and pattern resolution is met.

In another example, a system may comprise a processor configured to store data to a data storage medium, the data storage medium including a first dot composite including a first patterned array of dots of magnetic material, a second dot composite including a second patterned array of dots of magnetic material, and a non-magnetic space located between the first dot composite and second dot composite. An order in which a dot composite and a non-magnetic space occur may define the value of one bit.

A write phase and frequency is detected based on the initial reference pattern and the given reference pattern is written on the bit patterned media at the detected write phase and frequency.

Recording media comprises multiple first and second patterned media islands sequentially placed at different first and second radii along a length of a recording track. A recording head sequentially accesses the first and second islands as the head moves along a length of the recording track. A method is disclosed for determining position information of a transducer. At least a first code and a second code are chosen. The first code has different characteristics than the second code. User data written to a first sub-track is encoded with the first code and user data written to a second sub-track is encoded with the second code. The first code read from the first sub-track is obtained and the second code read from the second sub-track is obtained. Position information of the transducer is extracted from the obtained characteristics of the first code and the obtained characteristics of the second code.

A magnetic field transducer includes a phase transition material exhibiting a change from an antiferromagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase when heated above a critical temperature, means for applying a magnetic bias field to the phase transition material, and means for heating the phase transition material above the critical temperature. Magnetic recording heads that include the transducer and magnetic disc drives that include the magnetic recording heads are also described. A method of producing a magnetic field pulse including applying a magnetic bias field to a phase transition material, and heating the phase transition material to cause the phase transition material to change from an antiferromagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase, is also provided. The phase transition material can comprise a rare earth-transition metal alloy, where the alloy is heated above a compensation temperature.

Multilayer magnetic structures comprising composite layers and spacer layers are disclosed. The composite layers include a discontinuous magnetic phase such as Co, Ni or Fe platelets, and a continuous nonmagnetic phase such as C, AlO, SiO, ZrO, Cu, Ag and Au. The spacer layers may comprise Pt, Pd, Au or the like. The composite layers and spacer layers may be made by sputtering. The multilayer structures are useful as magnetic recording layers of magnetic recording media. In one embodiment, the recording media comprises a perpendicular magnetic recording medium including a substrate, a soft magnetic underlayer, a seed layer and the multilayer structure.

A magnetic recording disc is provided according to the present invention for magnetic recording. The magnetic recording disc includes a disc substrate having a locking pattern etched therein. Chemically synthesized iron-platinum particles are provided in the locking pattern and completely fill the locking pattern. The chemically synthesized iron-platinum nanoparticles exhibit short-range order characteristics forming self organized magnetic arrays.

A perpendicular exchange biased device comprises a layer of buffer material on a surface of a substrate, a layer of ferromagnetic material on a surface of the buffer layer, wherein the magnetization of the ferromagnetic layer lies in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the layer of ferromagnetic material, and a layer of antiferromagnetic material on a surface of the layer of ferromagnetic material. A method of making a perpendicular exchange biased device comprising positioning a layer of buffer material on a surface of a substrate, positioning a layer of ferromagnetic material on a surface of the layer of buffer material, wherein the magnetization of the ferromagnetic layer lies in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the layer of ferromagnetic material, and positioning a layer of antiferromagnetic material on a surface of the layer of ferromagnetic material is also included.
