A self-drilling screw composed of an austenitic or some other non-corrosive base material () is provided, having a shank (), having a cutting or shaping drilling or threaded tip () arranged at one shank end and having a hard coating () applied at least to the drilling or threaded tip () by electrodeposition, this hard coating () having a layer containing a transition metal, for example a hard chromium layer. The shank () has a hard edge layer () at least under the hard coating (). A topcoat () composed of a lubricating and heat-dissipating material, which preferably is metal, wax and/or lacquer, is applied to the hard coating ().

Drilling screw

A self-drilling screw made of an austenitic or other stainless steel, is provided having a drilling tip. The shank is integrally formed of an austenitic or other stainless steel and has a galvanically applied thin coating at least in the tip region, with the coating being harder than a non-coated region. The thin coating has a pearl-like or columnar surface, a coating thickness of at least 2 &#x3bc;m and a hardness in a range of from 500 to 1500 HV0.3. The self-drilling screw can be produced more simply than a typical self-drilling screw, in which the drilling tip consists of a harder material than the shank and is welded to the shank made of stainless steel. The coating ensures the drilling capacity and thread formation.

Self-drilling screw and use thereof

A screw () and a connection produced therewith of a thin metal sheet forming a substructure () to a plastics component () having a through-bore () and having a seal () located between the substructure () and the component (). The screw () has a shank () having a thread-cutting thread () and a tip () in the form of a boring part, and also a lower thread section () having a first thread outside diameter (D) and an upper thread section () having a second, larger thread outside diameter (D) and having a conically narrowing transition section () between the two thread sections (). The upper thread section () has a thread pitch (P) which is smaller than the thread pitch (P) of the lower thread section (). During the production of the connection, the upper thread is screwed into the through-bore (), wherein a form-fit is produced in the component () between the latter and the screw () and the material of the component () rests in a sealing manner around the upper thread section (). This produces a combination of a seal without a sealing washer and with a defined distance between the component and the substructure by defined compression of the seal ().
