A catalyst effective in hydrotreating and hydrocracking sulfur- and nitrogen-containing hydrocarbon feeds at low pressure. The catalyst is prepared by incorporating a platinum group metal such as palladium in ZSM-20 or in dealuminized zeolite Y. Unlike most palladium catalysts, this catalyst is not poisoned by nitrogen and sulfur in the feed.

A method is disclosed for converting an asphalt-free heavy hydrocarbon oil to high V.I. low pour point lube base stock and naphtha. The heavy oil is first catalytically dewaxed with a catalyst such as Ni-ZSM-5 and the dewaxed oil is then hydrocracked, or hydroconverted with a large pore zeolite catalyst such as dealuminized Y or ZSM-20 associated with palladium. The V.I. is controlled by the severity of the hydroconversion step.

The present invention provides a process for low pressure catalytic hydrocracking of refractory hydrocarbon charge stocks, such as coker gas oil or shale oil to products of reduced pour points by catalytic hydrotreating and cascading the hydrotreater effluent through a hydrocracking zone, containing a catalyst which is characterized by an alkali metal substantilly non-acidic crystalline zeolite having an alpha activity of less than about 10, a silica/alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index of approximately 1 to 12.
