A process of treating sheet materials with an aqueous treating composition is disclosed in which surfactants are incorporated in the composition to permit it to be foamed with gas to provide a foam which is stable in the form of a thin layer long enough to be handled, but which will collapse completely when heated. This is preferably done by employing a mixture of water soluble surfactant to stabilize the foam and water insoluble defoamer to break the foam when heat is applied. This foam is applied to a surface of the sheet material to provide stable foam thereon, and heat is employed to simultaneously cause the foam to collapse and dry the composition.

Polyethylene terephthalate fiber-containing fabric is flameproofed by application of an aqueous suspension of finely divided particles consisting essentially of octagonal hexabromide formed by the incomplete bromination of cis, trans, trans cyclododecatriene to provide a mixture having a melting point in the range of 177.degree.-191.degree. C. determined by differential scanning colorimetry using a heating rate of 10.degree. C. per minute. The treated fabric is dried and then heated with the octagonal hexabromide particles thereon to a temperature above the melting point of the mixture, but not in excess of about 200.degree. C. for a period long enough to achieve adequate penetration (30 seconds), to cause the hexabromide particles to diffuse into the fibers of the fabric to maximize fire resistance and obtain proper fixation of the particles to the fabric in a manner providing durability to laundering with minimum damage to the fabric.

Flameproofing of polyester fabrics using brominated cycloalkanes

A textile treating composition adapted to provide a relatively permanent antistatic and dirt repellent finish and consisting essentially of an aqueous dispersion of: 1. about 10% to about 20% of an antistatic agent comprising a compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R is an alkyl radical having 14 to 20 carbon atoms, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are, each independently, alkyl, hydroxy alkyl, alkyl substituted by carboxylic and/or sulphonic acid groups, aminoalkoxyalkyl or aminoalkyl wherein the amino group is unsubstituted or substituted by hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkylaminoalkyl or by the group R--CO-- or --R--CO--NH-alkoxyalkyl wherein R is alkyl having 14 to 20 carbon atoms, or one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is hydrogen; 2. about 3% to about 35% of an aqueous dispersion of hard particles having a weight average particle diameter of less than about 2 microns; 3. about 1% to about 6% of a fluorine-free inorganic or organic monobasic or polybasic acid; 4. 0% to about 5% of an antimicrobic agent; and 5. about 1% to about 35% of a fluorocarbon agent which provides a low free energy surface.
