Disclosed are various examples of provisioning a data processing unit (DPU) management operating system (OS). A management hypervisor installer executed on a host device launches or causes a server component to provide a management operating system (OS) installer image at a particular URI accessible over a network internal to the host device. A baseboard management controller (BMC) transfers the DPU management OS installer image to the DPU device. A volatile memory based virtual disk is created using the DPU management OS installer image. The DPU device is booted to a DPU management OS installer on the volatile memory based virtual disk. The DPU management OS installer installs a DPU management operating system to a nonvolatile memory of the DPU device on reboot of the DPU device.

Provisioning DPU management operating systems

Some embodiments provide a method for operating a physical server in a network. The method stores multiple copies of a virtual machine (VM) image at a network-accessible storage. The method uses a first copy of the VM image as a virtual disk to execute a VM on a hypervisor of a first physical computing device. The method uses a second copy of the VM image as a virtual disk accessible via a smart network interface controller (NIC) of a second physical computing device to execute an operating system of the second physical computing device.

Some embodiments provide a method for a compute manager that manages (i) virtual machines executing on host computers and (ii) physical computers. The method uses a first set of application programming interfaces (APIs) to communicate with a virtual machine (VM) executing on a host first computer via a hypervisor executing on the host first computer. The method uses the first set of APIs to communicate with a second computer via a smart network interface controller (NIC) of the second computer, wherein the smart NIC translates the first set of APIs into a different, second set of APIs for the second computer so that the compute manager manages the VM and the second computer with the same first set of APIs.

A method for booting a computer system includes: loading a first stage bootloader of a plurality of first stage bootloaders from a boot image based on a known configuration of the computer system; executing the first stage bootloader to identify a selected bootbank of a plurality of bootbanks in the boot image based on the known configuration of the computer system; executing, by the first stage bootloader, a second stage bootloader from the boot image with an instruction to boot from the selected bootbank; and executing, by the second stage bootloader, a binary file in the selected bootbank.
