A process that lends itself to automation for producing multi-layer second-order nonlinear optical polymer (NLOP) thin films by the forming of a polycation layer containing an NLO-active cationic polymer, having non-centrosymmetric chromophores, on a substrate followed by the forming of a polyanion layer, also having non-centrosymmetric chromophores, on the polycation layer. A predetermind number of the polycation and the polyanion layers may be alternated upon the surface as well as one or more buffer layers. An added benefit is the formation of an ultra-smooth surface of the same order of roughness as the substrate upon which the layers are formed.

Process for mass producing uniform multi-layer non-linear optical polymer thin polar films

An optical waveguide subsystem, and process, having at least one cladding in contact with at least one core. The cladding has a refractive index less than the refractive index of the core. Either the cladding or core contains a crosslinked polyimide that is substantially meta-linked. The polyimide has an absolute birefringence of from about 0.01 to about zero.

A stripline board material of hollow glass microspheres chemically bonded to a coating material and physically held in a polymeric matrix, preferably homo- or co-polymers of ethylene, propylene and/or styrene. The coating material is a difunctional silane with one functional group bound to the glass and the other bound either to the matrix or to a copolymer of a structure similar to the structure of the matrix. In the latter case, the sphere-silane-copolymer forms an intimate mixture with the matrix.
