A portable power supply apparatus is provided having reduced impedance losses. The portable power supply apparatus is comprised of: a portable housing; a battery system residing in the housing; and an inverter circuit residing in the housing. The battery system generates a direct current (DC) voltage having a magnitude greater than or equal to a peak value of a desired alternating current (AC) voltage. The inverter circuit receives the DC voltage directly from the battery system, converts the DC voltage to an AC output voltage and outputs the AC output voltage to one or more outlets exposed on an exterior surface of the portable housing.

Portable alternating current inverter having reduced imipedance losses

A power tool that includes a housing, a motor, a planetary transmission, a first bearing and a second bearing. The motor is disposed in the housing and includes an output shaft. The planetary transmission has a sun gear, a plurality of first planet gears, a first ring gear and a carrier. The sun gear is driven by the output shaft. The first planet gears are driven by the sun gear and have teeth that are meshingly engaged to teeth of the first ring gear. The carrier includes a rear carrier plate and a front carrier plate between which the first and second planet gears are received. The rear carrier plate includes a first bearing aperture. The first bearing is received in the first bearing aperture and is configured to support the output shaft. The second bearing is received onto the rear carrier plate to support the carrier relative to the housing.

Battery based portable power supply

A power tool has a motor having a stator made by separately forming pole pieces and field coils. The field coils are placed over necks of the pole path pieces. An armature has an outside diameter of at least 0.625 the outside diameter of the stator is placed in the stator. The housing has a girth of 200 mm or less with the motor wound to provide a maximum watts out to housing girth ratio of at least 5 maximum watts outs to 1 mm of housing girth. The field coils may be formed so that they extend beyond pole tips of the pole pieces.

Power tool with motor having a multi-piece stator

A power tool has a motor having a stator made by separately forming pole pieces, return path pieces and field coils. The field coils are placed over necks of the pole path pieces and the return path pieces are affixed to the pole pieces. An armature having an outside diameter of at least 0.625 the outside diameter of the stator is placed in the stator. The field coils may be formed so that they extend beyond pole tips of the pole pieces.

Power tools with motor having a multi-piece stator

A power tool may include an electronically commutated motor such as, for example, a brushless DC permanent magnet motor with a rotor having internally mounted magnets and/or cavities filled with air or other non-magnetic materials. A control system may be used to control the motor in a manner that implements field weakening when the speed of the motor increases beyond its rated motor speed, or when the torque demands on the motor continue to increase after the maximum power output of the motor is reached. The field weakening may offset the growing back EMF and may enable a constant power and constant efficiency to be achieved by the motor over a wide speed range, rather than at just a single predetermined operating speed. Pulse width modulation control of the motor may be used up until the motor reaches its maximum power output.

Electronically commutated motor and control system employing phase angle control of phase current

An armature for a brush commutated electric motor having a distributed coil winding arrangement for reducing brush arcing and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The winding pattern involves winding a first coil into a first pair of slots of the armature. A second coil having a first subcoil portion is then wound into the same slots as the first coil, while a second subcoil portion of the second coil is wound into a pair of slots that is offset by one slot position from the first pair of slots. The two subcoil portions have the same number of turns, and the total turns of the two subcoil portions equals the number of turns of the first coil. A third coil is then wound in the same slots as the second subcoil portion of the second coil. The third coil has the same number of turns as the first coil. This pattern is repeated around the armature. In a two coil per slot armature, this pattern enables the magnetic axis of each coil to be maintained at a constant angular position relative to the commutator bars to which it is coupled without the need for using uneven numbers of turns for the two subcoil portions of each segmented coil.

Motor armature having distributed windings for reducing arcing

An armature for a brush commutated electric motor having a distributed coil winding arrangement for reducing brush arcing and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The winding pattern involves segmenting each coil into first and second subcoil portions with differing pluralities of turns. Each subcoil portion is wound around separate pairs of spaced apart slots of a lamination stack. Adjacent coils are wound such that one subcoil portion of each is wound in a common slot to therefore form an overlapping arrangement of each pair of adjacently coils. The winding pattern serves to 'shift' the resultant magnetic axes of each coil in such a manner so as to significantly reduce brush arcing and the EMI resulting therefrom. The reduction in EMI is sufficient to eliminate the need for EMI reducing components, such as chokes, which have typically been required to maintain EMI to acceptably low levels. Commutation efficiency is also improved by the distributed winding pattern described above because of the reduction in the unevenness of the magnetic coupling between adjacent coils.

Method for manufacturing an armature of an electric motor

A cylinder/magnet assembly for a field of an electric machine, such as a stator of a brush type motor or a rotor of a brushless motor, alternator or generator, is formed by stamping a blank to form anchors extending upwardly from a surface of the blank and stamping holes in the blank where first and second portions of the anchors meet an inner surface of the cylinder to facilitate rolling of the cylinder from the blank. After a cylinder is rolled from the blank, pre-formed magnets are placed around an inner surface of the cylinder and plastic molded around the magnets and anchors to secure the magnets to the cylinder. In an aspect of the invention, the holes act as magnetic chokes. In another aspect of the invention, the anchors are formed as flux spreaders. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles of a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal distribution angles. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles of a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal numbers of magnets. In another aspect of the invention, flux spreaders are disposed on inner surfaces of the magnets of each pole of a cylinder and magnet assembly. In another aspect of the invention, the foregoing aspects are used in a stator of a motor. In another aspect of the invention, such a stator is used in a power tool.

Field assembly for a motor and method of making same

A stator of an electric motor is formed by inserting pre-formed magnets on a cylinder having anchors and plastic is molded around the magnets and anchors to secure the magnets to a surface of the cylinder, forming a cylinder/magnet assembly. A pilot feature is formed in at least one endwall of the plastic molding when it is molded. An end plate is located with respect to the cylinder/magnet assembly by mating a corresponding pilot feature of the end plate with the pilot feature in the endwall of the plastic molding. In another aspect of the invention, magnets are inserted into magnet receiving pockets of a cylinder and plastic molded therearound with the magnet pockets holding the magnets in place during molding of the plastic. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles of a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal distribution angles. In another aspect of the invention, the north and south poles of a cylinder and magnet assembly have unequal numbers of magnets. In another aspect of the invention, the anchors are also formed as flux spreaders. In another aspect of the invention, the stator is used in a power tool.
