An assay system and method for use in the field of chemical testing is disclosed. The assay system can be used for filtering whole blood for testing on an integrated circuit containing digital control functionality.

Digital control of on-chip magnetic particle assay

A display element is described. The display element includes: a network; a continuous phase; and a discontinuous mobile phase, which is capable of responding to an externally applied electric field such that under influence of the externally applied electric field, without effecting bulk movement of the continuous phase, the mobile phase displaces from one location to another location through or within the network. A process of manufacturing a display cell is also described. The process includes: obtaining a pair of electrodes; placing a network between the electrodes; assembling the electrodes and the network to form a sub-assembly; and injecting into the subassembly a discontinuous phase.

Systems, methods and compositions relating to display elements

New applications for the use of distinguishable particulate labels available in a variety of hues and sized in the submicron range are described. These applications include profiling of cellular components, obtaining secretion patterns, identifying a multiplicity of components in chromatographic or electrophoretic techniques and identification of desired immunoglobulin secreting cells.

Use of particulate labels in bioanalyte detection methods

An encapsulated surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tag. The tag includes a metal core and an encapsulant, typically a glass encapsulant. The encapsulant is further derivatized with a polymer.

Polymer coated SERS nanotag

A method for determining the presence of an analyte which is a specific binding pair member in a sample suspected of containing the analyte is described. The method involves: bringing together in an aqueous medium, the sample, an enzyme bound to a first specific binding pair member and an inhibitor for the enzyme bound to a second specific binding pair member wherein each specific binding pair member is capable of binding to the analyte or to a specific binding pair member complementary to the analyte; analyzing the medium for the activity of said enzyme; and relating the activity to the amount of analyte present in the medium. Compositions of matter and kits are also described.

Homogeneous immunoassays using enzyme inhibitors

An electrophoretic display is provided which includes first and second plates spaced apart to define a volume of space therebetween. The display also includes a first electrode positioned on the first plate, a second electrode positioned on the second plate, and an emulsion positioned within the space. The emulsion includes a non-polar phase forming a continuous phase of the emulsion and a polar phase forming a non-continuous phase of the emulsion. The polar phase of the emulsion is capable of forming droplets (reverse micelles or reverse emulsions) in the non-polar phase. The polar phase includes a dye which is insoluble in the non-polar phase, a polar solvent, and a detergent. Images are provided by the display by controlling the distribution of the polar phase droplets containing the dye in the non-polar liquid phase using an electric field formed between the first and second electrodes. A method is also provided for forming an image by electrophoretic phase separation of an emulsion. According to the method, an emulsion is formed between the non-polar phase which constitutes a continuous phase of the emulsion and the polar phase which constitutes a non-continuous phase of the emulsion. The polar phase forms droplets in the non-polar phase, the polar phase including a dye, a polar solvent, and a detergent. An image is formed in the display by applying an electric field across the emulsion which causes the polar phase droplets to redistribute themselves relative to the non-polar phase, redistribution including the coagulation of the polar phase in the non-polar phase as well as the separation of the polar phase from the non-polar phase.
