An interrupter device provides overload protection. The device includes a first terminal that is configured to establish an electrical connection to a first terminal of a high voltage surge arrester, a second terminal that is configured to establish an electrical connection to an electrical power grid line side conductor, and a chargeless disconnection trigger that causes an interruption in an electrically conductive path between the first and second terminal in response to an overload condition at the second terminal.

A method for preventing an electrical grid from failure in case of a temporary overvoltage includes providing an electrical grid line, a surge arrester and a disconnector device with a disconnector unit. The method further includes connecting the surge arrester at one terminal to the electrical grid line, connecting the surge arrester at its other terminal to a first terminal of the disconnector device, and connecting a second terminal of the disconnector device to ground potential. The method further includes interrupting the electrical connection in between the electrical grid line and the ground potential in response to a temporary overvoltage. The method further includes protecting the surge arrester from failure due to a thermal overload caused by the temporary overvoltage by operating the disconnector device before the surge arrester fails due to a thermal overload of the surge arrester.

Protection of a surge arrester with a better protection against failure from thermal overload in case of a temporary overvoltage in an electrical grid line

This present application concerns a method for preventing an electrical grid from a failure in case of a temporary overvoltage. A method comprising: a) providing an electrical grid line, a surge arrester and a disconnector device with a disconnector unit; b) connecting the surge arrester at one terminal to the electrical grid line; c) connecting the surge arrester at its other terminal to a second terminal of the disconnector device; d) connecting a first terminal of the disconnector device to ground potential; e) interrupting the electrical connection in between the electrical grid line and the ground potential in case of a temporary overvoltage; f) protecting the surge arrester from failure due to a thermal overload caused by the temporary overvoltages by operating the disconnector device before the surge arrester fails due to a thermal overload of the surge arrester.

A disconnector device for a surge arrester is provided. The disconnector device includes: a housing encompassing a cavity; a disconnector provided inside the cavity, having a first terminal connectable to the surge arrester, a second terminal connectable to ground, a movable member provided at the second terminal and being fitted to the cross section of the cavity, and a disconnector cartridge. The member is movably arranged such in the housing that once the disconnector operates, the movable member is propelled inside the cavity towards an end of the cavity. The housing has ventilation openings connecting the cavity to an outside of the disconnector device for releasing gases from the operating disconnector cartridge. These ventilation openings are dimensioned such that no particles of harmful size that are potentially capable of igniting a fire can pass the ventilation openings.

This disclosure concerns a disconnector device for a surge arrester. The disconnector device comprises a housing encompassing a cavity and a disconnector unit provided inside the cavity. The disconnector device is connectable to the surge arrester and to ground potential. The housing forms an inner housing of a housing unit. The housing unit comprising an inner housing and an outer housing. The at least one ventilation opening of the inner housing is fluidly connected to the at least one further ventilation opening of the outer housing such that a labyrinth with a gas escape path for the gases from the operating disconnector cartridge is formed.
