A technique facilitates diagnosis of a telemetry system, such as a mud pulse telemetry system or an electro-magnetic telemetry system. The technique comprises operating a telemetry system in a wellbore and collecting a variety of data. The data may relate to a rig state, a downhole state, a signal state, a surface state, and/or other suitable types of data. The data is processed to determine whether states of operation indicated by the data match states indicating a problem with operation of the telemetry system. If a problem is detected, appropriate information regarding the problem is transmitted for use in correcting the problem.

Telemetry diagnostics

Data transmission from a bottom hole assembly (BHA) includes obtaining a scan from multiple scans forming a downhole data log of a borehole within a subterranean formation. The scan includes a sequence of data items from a sensor in the BHA located in the borehole. Each data item corresponds to an azimuth angle of the sensor. Further, compressed scan data is generated from the sequence of data items on a per-scan basis, and transmitted, using a pre-determined borehole telemetry, to a surface unit.

LWD real-time borehole image transmission

Devices, systems and methods for transmitting downhole data are provided. The devices include a rotor-stator modulator configured for use in a drill string, and a drive and control system configured to drive the rotor according to a modulation scheme resulting in both oscillating and full rotational movement. The modulation scheme can comprise a trajectory algorithm such as a QAM trajectory algorithm. The systems include a modulator disposed within a drill string which creates modulated pulses according to an algorithm providing for both oscillating and full rotational movement of the rotor, and may also include a demodulator. The methods include transmitting coded data by driving a rotor relative a stator disposed in a drill string according to a modulation scheme that provides both oscillating and full rotational movement and results in modulated mud pulses representative of data recorded downhole, and may involve decoding the data.

Mud pulse telemetry devices, systems, and methods

A system for use in a drilling operation that includes uphole electronic equipment and a drill string suspended in an earth borehole, a section of wired drill pipe that is part of a communication link between a downhole tool and the uphole electronic equipment, an interface for communicating between the section of wired drill pipe and a communication source/destination. The system includes a housing having a generally cylindrical outer shape which has a passage there through. The housing has a WDP end connectable to the section of wired drill pipe and a further end connectable to the communication source/destination. The system also includes a WDP circuit module disposed within the housing. The WDP circuit module electrically coupleable with the wired drill pipe section. The system includes a further circuit module, disposed within the housing, which is electrically coupled with the WDP circuit module and electrically coupleable with the communication source/destination.

Interface and method for wellbore telemetry system

Systems and methods for monitoring and/or operating a rig site system are provided. In accordance with one embodiment, a method for monitoring a rig site system may include obtaining sensor data at a rig site and transmitting pre-processed sensor data pertaining to the sensor data from the rig site over a network link to a monitoring site. The method may also include demodulating the pre-processed sensor data at the monitoring site to produce demodulated data. The method may also include analyzing the demodulated data at the monitoring site. The sensor data may comprise at least one of surface sensor data, MWD sensor data, or LWD sensor data, or any combination thereof.

Method and apparatus for off-rig processing rig sensor data

A method and arrangement for mud telemetry having components of a wellbore casing, a combination rotor stator positioned inside the wellbore casing, an uphole detection arrangement configured to sense increases and decreases in pressure, a valve actuator, a valve configured to be actuated by the valve actuator, the valve configured to convey a fluid from an inside of the wellbore casing to an outside of the wellbore casing and cause a decrease in fluid pressure in the wellbore casing, and a downhole tool configured to measure at least one formation parameter.

A hybrid telemetry system for passing signals between a surface control unit and a downhole tool is provided. The downhole tool is deployed via a drill string into a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation. The hybrid telemetry system includes an uphole connector, a downhole connector, and a cable operatively connecting the uphole and downhole connectors. The uphole connector is operatively connectable to a drill string telemetry system for communication therewith. The downhole connector is operatively connectable to the downhole tool for communication therewith.

A wellbore communication system for a wellsite having a downhole tool deployed from a rig into a wellbore penetrating a subsurface formation is provided. The system includes at least one wellsite sensor adapted to collect wellsite data, at least one mobile communication module locatable at various positions about the wellsite and a surface unit operatively connected to the at least one communication module. The communication module includes a housing, at least one communication interface adapted to receive signals from the at least one wellsite sensor, at least one signal-conditioning module positioned in the housing, a power supply and a connector adapted to receive a communication link to the surface unit.

Wellsite communication system and method

Methods and systems for pulse generation assembly that includes a plurality of staged valves operably coupled serially in a bottomhole assembly of a wellbore tool. The plurality of staged valves are operated in a substantially synchronized manner, thereby generating a series of pressure pulses. The signal strength of the generated pulse signal is multiplied by the number of staged valves in the series, and the pulse generation assembly of the disclosure is less susceptible to jamming, shock, and erosion. Further, by sequentially stopping at least one stage of the assembly and then synchronously rotating other stages, amplitude modulation is accomplished.

Multi-stage modulator

Systems and methods cancel or compensate for an echo or noise in borehole communication. The systems and methods provide a downhole tool configured to provide borehole communication via mud pulse telemetry. The downhole tool pulses drilling fluid to generate a first pressure pulse and a second pressure pulse. The first pressure pulse moves upwardly with respect to the downhole component and is encoded with data associated a downhole measurement. A sensor is electrically connected to and in communication with the downhole tool. The first sensor is adapted to detect a characteristic of the second pressure pulse in the drilling mud. A ideal pressure pulse or a correction pressure pulse is generated by a downhole tool or a mud pulse modulator to reduce or cancel noise of the second pressure pulse.

Systems and methods for canceling noise and/or echoes in borehole communication

A technique for communicating data within a wellbore is provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving digital data and encoding the digital data into symbols each representative of one or more data bits of the digital data. In this embodiment, the method also includes modulating the phase of an acoustic wave within the wellbore to represent the plurality of symbols, wherein modulating the phase of an acoustic wave includes changing the phase of the acoustic wave such that the acoustic wave includes smooth phase transitions between successive phases representative of the plurality of symbols. Various additional methods, systems, and devices are also provided.

Mud pulse telemetry data modulation technique

The disclosure has application for use in conjunction with an operation of drilling an earth borehole using: a drilling rig, a drill string having its generally upper end mechanically coupleable with and suspendable from the drilling rig, and a bottom hole assembly adjacent the lower end the drill string, the bottom hole assembly including a drill bit at its lower end. A method is set forth for obtaining information about at least one parameter sensed at the bottom hole assembly, including the following steps: providing at least one measuring device in the bottom hole assembly, the at least one measuring device producing measurement data representative of a measured condition at the bottom hole assembly; providing an uphole processor system at the earth's surface; providing a drill string telemetry system coupled with the at least one measuring device and coupled with the uphole processor system; and transmitting the data from the measuring device to the uphole processor system via the drill string telemetry system.
