Contextual information for wireless communications is managed in terms of management objects (MO) using device management (DM) protocol. Contextual information management is performed by determining a need to change from an old configuration to a new configuration, retrieving profile information necessary to make a decision about the new configuration, and making a decision about the new configuration based upon the retrieved profile information. The new configuration may include information about access technology and changes in one or more defined profiles.

Managing contextual information for wireless communications

According to one embodiment, a method of requesting a random access connection between a mobile terminal and a base station includes: receiving, by the mobile terminal, information comprising at least one signature root sequence index, a cyclic shift parameter, and a number of signatures used for representing a boundary between a first signature set and a second signature set; preparing, by the mobile terminal, random access signatures according to the at least one signature root sequence index and the cyclic shift parameter, wherein at least one of the random access signatures is associated with the first signature set and the remaining of the random access signatures are associated with the second signature set; and selecting, by the mobile terminal, a random access preamble from the first signature set or the second signature set based on a message size and a radio condition.

Methods for allocating and choosing dedicated signatures for random access are provided. Options for allocating dedicated signatures include allocating the dedicated signature from the unused space of the random signature root index when there is unused space and allocating more dedicated signatures from the same root index using the same time/frequency resources if additional signatures are needed, and reserving some preambles from the contention-based random access preambles from both sets of preambles. The present invention also proposes that the dedicated signatures be reserved in each of two sets of preambles.

Dedicated signature allocation and choice

Optimization of the LTE handover procedure is provided by presenting alternatives for allocating a dedicated signature used for contention-free random access during the handover procedure as well as using an expiry time for a dedicated signature and different alternative behaviors for a mobile terminal upon expiry of the dedicated signature.

A method and apparatus to reduce the overhead related to allocation of the terminal identifier in a random access procedure and an optimized method for detecting a collision are provided. By allocating a 'short' terminal identifier in the Random Access Response that is identifiers and allocating the permanent terminal identifier at the end of the random access procedure, the size of data that must be transmitted in the Random Access Response is reduced and power is saved.

Optimized random access channel (RACH) access

A method and apparatus for enhancement of the random access procedure of a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system are provided. Enhancements include modeling one cycle in the random access procedure since only one counter is necessary and controlling the delay prior to the preamble transmission in order to reduce conflicts by multiple mobile terminals using the random access channel.

Downloading new default configurations allows a mobile terminal to use the default configuration as often as possible for radio bearer setup, thereby precluding the need to broadcast any pre-defined configurations, parameters and identifiers.

A procedure for RACH initial access in a mobile terminal is provided such that necessary information is conveyed the for the initial access procedure with less overhead. The method allow an accurate choice of the uplink transport format by allowing the mobile terminal to determine by itself whether a certain transport format may be used for the transmission of a message prior to the first preamble transmission and prior to the power ramping.

Procedure for non synchronized radio access (NSRA) resource assignment

A method and mobile terminal for an improved random access prioritization scheme for Random Access Channel (RACH) transmission is provided by increasing the transmission probability based on remaining access cycles and, whereby the access delay for terminals having less remaining access cycles is decreased by increasing the transmission probability.
