A height-adjustable support for a vehicle having an outer support pipe, an inner support pipe displaceably supported in the outer support pipe and deployable out of and retractable into the outer support pipe by a drive spindle, a gear unit arranged in the outer support pipe and a drive unit for driving the gear unit for moving the inner support pipe relative to the outer support pipe, wherein the drive unit has a motor arranged outside the cross section of the outer support pipe and a transmission unit, wherein a rotation axis defined by a motor shaft extends outside the outer support pipe and the transmission unit is configured to transmit a torque from the motor shaft to the gear unit, and wherein the transmission unit has a housing and a drive pinion protruding out of the housing and engaging the gear unit.

A height-adjustable support for semitrailers, having a stationary outer support tube, an inner support tube, which is arranged in a longitudinally displaceable manner therein, and a gearbox output shaft, on which is seated in a rotationally fixed manner a bevel wheel of relatively small diameter which belongs to a bevel wheel gear stage which drives the spindle drive for the purpose of displacing the inner support tube. Two large-diameter gearwheels are arranged in a rotationally fixed manner on the gearbox output shaft, the gearwheel being located exclusively within the flux of force of the manual drive, which is initiated via the hand crank, and the gearwheel only transmitting the flux of force which is brought about by the motor, which, in a known manner, may be arranged inside or outside the support.

In order to be able to handle containers of a height greater than the structural height of a rack and pinion jack in its retracted state, the top crosspiece of the rack and pinion jack is provided to be bent and provided with a double-acting engagement part. Thus, the top crosspiece can be brought into its top position with its engagement part engaging with the top corner metal fittings of a container of which the height exceeds that of the rack and pinion jack in a retracted state. By a simple 180.degree. rotation of the top crosspiece, its engagement part can be brought into engagement with the top corner metal fittings of another container, having a different structural height. In this manner, the rack and pinion jacks can be adapted to any height setting of the top crosspiece by 180.degree. rotation of the same to any two containers of different structural height. Thus the rack and pinion jacks are suitable even for containers of which the height lies below the level of the top articulation point of the bottom crosspiece of the rack and pinion jack.

A lifting and depositing device for a large container has connecting longerons which are approximately the height of the container and are attached to the corner fittings of the large container to be raised and lowered. The connecting longerons are arranged at the corners of the large containers and, at the bottom ends at some distance to the side, they support at least one more connecting longeron for an overhang beam of a rack and pinion jack. The rack and pinion jack can be raised and lowered along upright, at the bottom ends of which are arranged pairs of wheels. In order to be able to adjust the pairs of wheels in a simple manner to different track gauges (narrow and wide), the overhang beam can be attached either to the connecting longeron which is approximately the height of the container or to the additional connecting longeron.
