The ignition system of a five-cylinder gasoline engine utilizes two ignition coils, each serving two cylinders which are fired at instants of the firing sequence which are separated by the firing of one of the cylinders served by the other of these ignition coils. A third ignition coil fires only the remaining cylinder. The sparkplugs of two cylinders fired by the same ignition coil are connected through oppositely poled diodes. This arrangement avoids circuit closing sparks when either of the twin primary windings of the ignition coils serving two cylinders is turned on. There are thus five separate primary windings and only three separate secondary windings, and the former are turned on and off by individual electronic switching circuits triggered in sequence by individual pulse generators responsive to a magnet on a single rotary disc.

The control generator of an ignition distributor for a transistor-coil ignition comprises an annular coil (55), a rotor (54) and a stator, which is a riveted unit comprising a stator plate (18), a permanent magnet (17) and a pole disc (56). The rotor and the pole disc are molded elements of sintered iron or of a mixture of sintered iron powder and carbonyl iron powder having a binder of thermosetting resin. The rotor and the pole disc have cooperating pole teeth (59,51), which are directed parallel to the axis (60) and whose cross section is triangular, with the triangular tips oriented toward one another. These 'pointed teeth' produce a more steeply inclined signal course, as a result of which a decreased inherent shifting of the inductive transducer, and thereby more reliable starting of the engine, are attained.

Ignition distributor for internal combustion engines

To protect the ignition system against high over voltages upon removal of a load in the high voltage circuit, represented by the spark gap of a spark plug, and a distribution gap of a distributor, an electrically conductive terminal element, such as a flag, a spring biased tab, or a push spring which is connectible to ground or chassis is so located that, when the spark plug cable terminals are connected, the insulator of the spark plug cable terminal will be interposed between the flag and the high voltage terminal which is to be protected. The flag may be permanently spaced from the high voltage terminal--for example to prevent low voltage dc flow, when applied to the high voltage terminal of the coil; maybe spring biased to fit against a normally isolated terminal for example a spark plug distributor terminal; or maybe in form of a compression spring element which is pushed from a position adjacent a grounding cap into a position remote therefrom and where the normal plug insulator is attached by the high voltage pin terminal connection on a spark plug.

Safety gap for an ignition system in an internal combustion engine

An injection-molded cast aluminum base shell, open at the bottom and having individual openings at the top through which respectively protrude a part of the ignition transformer and a part of the transistorized circuit unit, in each case for external connections, consolidates enough of the circuit components to provide an assembly that can be mounted in an accessible portion of the motor compartment of a vehicle on the vehicle body structure to facilitate comprehensive maintenance attention.
