A preceramic substituted borazine polymer of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl, and x is a positive integer. Also disclosed are methods for making the polymer, methods for converting the polymer into coatings, shaped articles, articles including fibers and filaments formed from the polymer, blends of the foregoing polymer and preceramic triamino-N-tris (trialkylsilyl) borazines, and methods for thermally decomposing the foregoing polymers to form shaped articles of boron nitride.

This invention concerns itself with a class of novel dihalo-substituted monophospha-s-triazines as exemplified by the compounds 1-dichlorophospha-3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-2,4,6-triazine and 1-dichlorophospha-3,5-bis[C.sub.3 F.sub.7 OCF(CF.sub.3)CF.sub.2 OCF(CF.sub.3)]-2,4,6-triazine, as well as their thio and azido derivatives.

Dihalo-monophospha-s-triazines and their derivatives

Fluorinated alkyl or alkylether 1,2,4-oxadiazole compounds are prepared by cyclizing the corresponding alkyl or alkylether imidoylamidoximes in vacuo or in an inert atmosphere at a temperature within the range of 40.degree. to 100.degree. C. for a period of 8 to 144 hours in the presence of an acid compound which can accept ammonia to form a salt. The imidoylamidoximes usable in this process may be either polymeric or nonpolymeric. The products, when polymeric, have excellent heat, chemical and solvent resistance.

Preparation of perfluorinated 1,2,4-oxadiazoles

A method for preparing unsymmetrical diphosphatetraazacyclooctatetraenes and the novel products produced thereby. The synthesis involves an interaction between an imido-tetraaryl-diphosphinic acid trihalide and a perfluorinated imidoylamidine in the presence of an acid acceptor.

A method for synthesizing symmetrical diphosphatetraazacyclooctatetraenes and the products produced thereby. The synthesis involves effecting a reaction between a diaryltrihalophosphorane of a perfluoroalkyl amidine in the presence of an acid acceptor.

Diphospha-s-triazines wherein the two phosphorus atoms are substituted by aromatic groups and the carbon atom is substituted by either a perfluoroalkyl or a perfluoroalkylether moiety. The triazines exhibit a broad range of properties and are useful as antioxidant-anticorrosion agents, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids.

A lubricant composition comprising a perfluorinated polyalkylether base fluid and a minor amount of a diphospha-s-triazine in which the two phosphorus atoms are substituted by aromatic groups and the carbon atom is substituted by a perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkylether moiety.

Bis-benzoins of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is meta-phenylene or para-phenylene are prepared by first conting aldehydes of the formula ##STR2## with sodium bisulfite to form bisulfite addition products of the formula ##STR3## THEN CONTACTING THE BISULFITE ADDITION PRODUCTS WITH EITHER POTASSIUM CYANIDE OR SODIUM CYANIDE TO FORM CYANOHYDRINS OF THE FORMULA ##STR4## and finally contacting the cyanohydrins with benzaldehyde to form the bis-benzoins. The bis-benzoins can be oxidized to form the corresponding bis-benzils which are useful as starting materials for producing phenylated polyquinoxalines which in turn are useful as coatings for fibers, graphite precursors, films and laminating materials.
