A device for applying a double-sided coating to a substrate comprises three transport lines which are mutually connected by conveying stations in the form of belt-type conveyors. The substrate is placed onto a paper web, and the upper surface of the substrate is coated with the liquid to be applied in a spraying station in an electrostatic field; subsequently dried; turned through 180.degree. in the horizontal direction by a first belt-type conveyor; and passed onto a punched conveyor belt which is endlessly guided about a suction roller. The substrate is turned upside down by the suction roller, through a jet of compresed air. The substrate is transported onto a second belt-type conveyor where it is horizontally turned through 180.degree. and conveyed onto the third transport line, in which it is again passed through a cleaning station and a spraying station where the other surface of the substrate is coated with a liquid resist. The substrate is then conveyed on to an air cushion produced by a dynamic air pressure box and is moved through the air pressure box by pushers rotating on an endless magnetic belt where it is cooled on the air cushions and then deposited in a tray.

A device for deshirring, smoothing and braking a shirred tubular casing during stuffing of the casing with a fluid mass flowing under pressure from the stuffing horn of a stuffing machine into the tubular casing. The device comprises an annular body having a central opening releasably securable to the stuffing horn, said annular body having recesses on its outer surface extending parallel to its longitudinal axis. The recesses have a substantially U-shaped, V-shaped or rectangular cross-sectional configuration or end view configuration. The configuration of the braking and smoothing elements corresponds to that of the recesses in the surface of the annular body. The braking elements and/or the annular body are displaceable relative to each other either parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stuffing horn or the elements are displaceable perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stuffing horn so that the braking elements can be extended into the recesses or spaced away from the recesses. An apparatus comprising a device of the aforementioned type is also disclosed.

A device for deshirring, smoothing and braking a shirred tubular casing during stuffing of the tubular casing with a fluid material, such as a sausage mixture, comprising a substantially rigid hollow body with an outer circumferential surface having a substantially circular cross section and with a central opening having securing elements for receiving and releasably securing the hollow body on the outer surface of the stuffing horn of a stuffing device adjacent the stuffing horn outlet. The hollow body is disposed inside an unshirred end portion of the shirred tubular casing having a prescribed inner diameter, and said hollow body has a substantially annular, cylindrical form with a maximum external diameter which is smaller than the prescribed inner diameter of the unshirred tubular casing. The outer circumferential surface of the hollow body is provided with an annular recess having a substantially V-shaped or U-shaped cross section whereby the minimum diameter of the hollow body in the region of the recess is from 25 to 65 percent smaller than the maximum diameter of said hollow body. The device further comprises a braking unit for restricting the speed of withdrawal of the tubular casing during stuffing.

A process is disclosed for coating the inside surface of a length of tubing comprising the steps of forming at least one loop of tubing with a downwardly inclined portion and an upwardly inclined portion; filling the cavity of the tubing forming the loop with a coating liquid; transporting the tubing along its longitudinal axis in a substantially vertically upward direction to coat the inside of the tubing above the level of the coating liquid with an initial layer of coating liquid; constricting the tubing adjacent to and above the level of the coating liquid along a constriction zone transverse to the longitudinal axis of the tubing, the constriction zone progressively diminishing in width in the direction of travel of the tubing to reduce the thickness of the initial layer and form a thin layer of desired thickness on the inside of the tubing issuing from the constriction zone; filling the cavity of the tubing issuing from the metering device with support gas; and exposing the tubing to heat at a sufficient temperature to fuse the coating layer to the inside of the tubing and form an uninterrupted film of uniform thickness thereon. The coating liquid can comprise an aqueous polymeric dispersion containing at least about 15% by weight of dispersed polymer based on the total weight of the dispersion and preferrably in the range of about 15 to 60% by weight.
