Deflection adjustment roll and process of operating deflection adjustment roll. Deflection adjustment roll includes a yoke, antifriction bearings, which are lubricated with a liquid, a roll jacket which is pivotably coupled to the yoke via the antifriction bearings, and a sealing arrangement coupled to a coolant supply. A first disposal path is structured and arranged to guide a lubricant stream from the antifriction bearing, and a second disposal path, which is separate from the first disposal path, is structured and arranged for guiding a coolant stream from the sealing arrangement.

Deflection adjustment roll

Roll that includes a roll axle, a roll jacket, and a bearing ring positioned to rotatably support the roll jacket, and calender that includes the roll. The bearing ring is non-rotatable but is radially movable relative to the roll axle. A locking device is positionably adjustable to selectively block and unblock a radial lift movement, and the locking device includes a rotatable part having a longitudinal opening. The rotatable part is rotatable into a first rotational position in which the longitudinal opening is oriented substantially parallel to a direction of the radial lift movement, and is rotatable into a second rotational position in which the radial lift movement is blocked. The calender further includes a neighboring roll arranged to form a nip with the roll, and at least one further roll. The neighboring roll and the further rolls are mounted for displacement in the pressing direction, and a device arranged to selectively block and unblock the displacement of the neighboring roll.

Roll and calender

Sealing arrangement between relatively rotatable components that includes a first component having a cylindrical circumferential surface on one of an interior and exterior circumference, and a second component having a ring groove open toward the circumferential surface. A ring-shaped carrier is arranged to be displaceable in the ring groove, a centering rod is arranged to guide the ring-shaped carrier on the circumferential surface, and a radial lip seal is arranged to rest against the circumferential surface in an elastic manner. An axial seal is arranged to rest against a side wall of the ring groove, and an anti-twisting device is coupled to the ring-shaped carrier and arranged to enable a limited range of motion in all directions of a radial plane.

Sealing arrangement between two components rotating relative to one another

A web guidance device for a calender and a method of threading a web through a calender. The web guidance device is for a roll stack having several rolls which form a plurality of nips, and includes a movable web guidance device which is fixable in at least one insertion position and arranged on at least one side of the roll stack, wherein the web guidance device guides a beginning of the web through the roll stack. The method is for threading a material web through a calender which has a roll stack having at least a first nip and a second nip, and includes feeding a web beginning through a first nip from one side of the roll stack, engaging the web beginning on the other side of the roll stack with a web guidance device, and guiding the web beginning to a second nip with the web guidance device.

Calender web threading device and method

Deflection adjustment roll and process for supporting a roll jacket on a crosspiece of the deflection compensation roll. The deflection compensation roll includes a crosspiece, roller bearings composed of radial bearings and at least one hydrostatic bearing arrangement, and a roll jacket, which is rotatably supported on the crosspiece by the roller bearings. The at least one hydrostatic bearing arrangement acts in the axial direction. The process includes positioning radial roller bearings each bearing end of the deflection compensation roll and between the crosspiece and the roll jacket, wherein the radial roller bearings absorb radial forces, and positioning at least one hydrostatic bearing arrangement between the crosspiece and the roll jacket, wherein the at least one hydrostatic bearing arrangement absorbs axial forces.

Deflection compensation roll and process for supporting a roll jacket on a crosspiece of the deflection compensation roll

Pressure processing roll with a roll jacket, the roll jacket rotatably mounted on a carrier by a bearing arrangement. The bearing arrangement has at least one hydrostatically supported bearing surface, which forms a gap with an opposing surface. A normal to the hydrostatically supported bearing surface, and therefore a normal force, has at least one axially oriented component. The bearing arrangement is acted upon by a predefined axially oriented force which substantially completely closes the gap in the absence of hydrostatic pressure in the hydrostatically supported bearing.

Pressure processing roll

Deflection compensation roll with a jacket lift. The deflection compensation roll includes a carrier that is fixed against rotation, a support device coupled to the carrier, a jacket rotatably mounted on the support device, and a radial seal and an axial seal positioned between the jacket and the carrier. A ring groove is coupled to one of the jacket and the carrier, a ring body is arranged for axial movement in the ring groove. The ring body includes a face adjacent to an atmosphere outside of the jacket and a circumference. A cylindrical sealing surface is coupled to the other of the jacket and the carrier. An axial sealing lip is located on the face adjacent to the atmosphere to contact a side wall of the ring groove, and a radial sealing lip is located on the circumference to contact, and to rotate relative to, the cylindrical sealing surface.

Deflection compensation roll

A calender roll including a cylindrical base body, a cover composed of elastic plastic material, and a support cylinder composed of a light metal that carries the cover and is supported by the base body. The support cylinder may include a plurality of coolant conduits.

Calendar roll with coolant conduits

A calender for treating both sides of a paper web includes hard rollers and soft rollers. Working nips are formed between the juncture of each hard roller and soft roller. The roller stack can be loaded from one end, and preferably includes six to eight rollers. A changeover nip is formed by the juncture of two soft rollers or at the transition between two stacks. When using two stacks, each stack preferably has three to five rollers. At least one working nip has a dwell time of at least 0.1 ms. A heatable roller adjacent to the working nip is heated to a surface temperature of at least 100.degree. C. The roller stack is loaded such that an average compressive stress in the working nip is greater than or equal to 42 N/mm.sup.2.

Calender for treating both sides of a paper web

A calender for treating a paper web includes a roller stack being loaded with a load on one end. The calender has at least two hard rollers each having a substantially smooth outer surface. The at least two hard rollers each have a device for heating a surface of the roller to a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. The calender also includes at least two soft rollers, wherein each of the at least two soft rollers is disposed adjacent to at least one of the at least two hard rollers to form a working nip therebetween. At least one working nip has a dwell time of the paper web passing through the working nip of at least 0.1 ms. The load on the rollers produces an average compressive stress in the at least one working nip of at least 42 N/mm.sup.2. An arithmetic mean of the numerical value of the surface temperature T, the dwell time t and the compressive stress p in all of the working nips satisfies the following relationship:

Calender for the treatment of a paper web and process for its operation

A calender arrangement having vertically-arranged upper, center and lower rollers with matching upper, center and lower carrier-blocks and a suspended spindle, comprises a support element above a bearing-surface on the upper carrier-block. The support-element aids in lifting the suspended spindle and a carrier-nut when raising the upper carrier-block. An insert is placed between a bearing-surface on the upper carrier-block and the support-element, which comprises a horizontal slider seated on the upper carrier-block, which enables a relatively small motor to be used to reset the carrier-nut.

Calender

A controlled deflection roll for use in calenders and like machines has a non-rotatable carrier for a hollow cylindrical shell the end portions of which are rotatable on bearings and the central portion of which surrounds hydraulically operated shell deforming elements. A first hydraulic circuit is provided to supply heated oil to the deforming elements, and a second hydraulic circuit serves to feed lubricant to the bearings. The two circuits are separated from each other by thermal barriers which are installed between the shell and the carrier intermediate the deforming elements and the bearings. Valves and/or flow restrictors are provided in the second circuit to vary the rate of feed of lubricant to and/or the flow of lubricant from the bearings. This renders it possible to establish a desired temperature profile along the full length of the peripheral surface of the shell.

Roll for use in calenders and like machines

A calender roll wherein a cylindrical shell is rotatably mounted on a stationary carrier by way of bearings which are disposed in the end portions of the shell. The median portion of the shell is heated by a first heating device, and the end portions of the shell are heated by a discrete second heating device. The second heating device has channels which are provided in the end portions of the shell and/or indictive heaters which are adjacent to the exterior of the end portions of the shell. Alternatively or in addition to such expedients, the second heating device can include the bearings in the end portions of the shell; each such bearing includes or constitutes an axial or radial hydrostatic bearing which is heated by hydraulic fluid to thereby heat the respective end portion of the shell. The second heating device ensures that the effective length of the shell approximates or even matches the axial length of the shell.

Heatable roll for use in calenders and the like

A roll assembly for use in calenders has a non-rotatable carrier which is surrounded by a rotatable and radially movable hollow cylindrical shell. At least one end of the shell is driven by a pair of gears one of which is mounted in an annular bearing member surrounding a portion of the carrier and the other of which is connected with the one end of the shell. The bearing member shares the radial movements of the shell relative to the carrier. To this end, the radial position of the shell is monitored by one or two sensors in the form of first cylinder and piston units, and the bearing member is adjustable by two second cylinder and piston units. The cylinder chamber of each first unit is connected in circuit with the cylinder chamber of a different second unit, and the ratio of cross-sectional areas of the pistons of the first units to the cross-sectional areas of pistons of the second units is selected in such a way that the radial displacement of the bearing member matches or approximates the radial displacement of the shell. This prevents the application of pronounced stresses to the gears. The fluid in the two circuits is maintained above atmospheric pressure.

Roll assembly with rotatable shell for use in calenders and like machines

A calender roll wherein a cylindrical shell is rotatably mounted on a stationary carrier by way of bearings which are disposed in the end portions of the shell. The median portion of the shell is heated by a first heating device, and the end portions of the shell are heated by a discrete second heating device. The second heating device has channels which are provided in the end portions of the shell and/or indictive heaters which are adjacent to the exterior of the end portions of the shell.
