A machine tool and a method for aligning a workpiece with an axis of rotation of the machine tool that accommodates the workpiece defined by a hollow shaft including an annular workpiece contour extending a length of the workpiece. The workpiece is clamped to a chuck and supported by clamping supports that engage the outer surface of the workpiece. A moveable tool carrier supports at least one sensor and is operable to position the sensor in proximity to the annular workpiece contour along its length. The sensor measures a distance between the sensor and the workpiece contour over a plurality of defined angles of the annular workpiece contour and at a plurality of locations along the length to obtain measurement data that is used to determine an approximated longitudinal central axis of the workpiece that is aligned with the axis of rotation of the machine tool.

A technique for aligning a wheelset using a wheelset truing machine is disclosed. Using the technique, the wheelset may be aligned by roughly aligning the wheelset truing machine, placing each wheel of the wheelset on at least one roller, determining the distance of tread points on each wheel on the rollers relative to the center of revolution of each wheel by forming measurements and calculations, and coinciding the center of revolution of each wheel with the corresponding setpoint of the machine center. The measurement is taken of the periphery and of the concentricity error and a distance of the tread points determined by the triangulation principle. The technique includes a wheelset aligning device having a locating fixture for locating the wheelset, a measuring device including a-peripheral measuring instrument and a concentricity error measuring instrument, at least two rollers disposed to be swiveled in a x-y plane and to be traversed in a direction perpendicular to the x-y plane on the wheel side of the wheelset to evaluate a respective wheel measurement in the x-y plane by interacting with the wheel thus allowing for coincidence between the respective center of revolution of the wheel and the respective setpoint of the machine center.

An apparatus for locating the center of rotation of a wheelset. The apparatus contains two movable roller assemblies each designed to establish circumferential contact with a wheel at a different location on the wheel periphery, a movable lifting device connected to each such roller assembly, encoders for determining the extent to which each of the movable roller assemblies is moved in a linear direction during rotation of the wheel of the wheelset while in contact with the wheel, and an encoder for determining the extent to which the wheel of such wheelset moves in the x and y axes axis during rotation of the wheel about its centrally mounted axes.

An apparatus for measuring the contours of a railroad wheel which contains a tool slide, a measuring arm pivotally attached to the tool slide, a measuring wheel rotatably attached to the measuring arm, a device for moving the measuring arm horizontally, vertically, and pivotally, a marker, an optical sensor, and a device for sensing the movement of the measuring arm. The apparatus also contains a first encoder for determining the degree to which the measuring arm moves during any particular time during the rotation of the railroad wheel in any particular rotation cycle, and, additionally, a second encoder for determining at what point in said particular rotation cycle said measuring arm has moved.
