A method for the cementation of a metal from a solution containing metallic ions by the addition of a finely divided cementation medium, wherein the cementation reaction is carried out in a reaction chamber located in an oscillating reactor which is at least partially filled with agitation bodies inert with respect to the reaction, the agitation bodies having a maximum dimension in the range from 2 to 150 mm and being sufficiently large to transmit the oscillations of the reactor into the reaction chamber, the specific gravity of the bodies being appreciably greater than the specific gravity of the solids in the reactor. The method is particularly applicable to the cementation of copper.

Method for the cementation of metals

A method for the recovery of metal values from a solution by means of a cementation reaction in an oscillating container wherein the resulting cementate is converted by pyrometallurgical methods into molten metal and slag. In accordance with the present invention, at least a portion of the slag in particulate form is directed back into the oscillation reaction to serve as an agitation medium.

Recovery of metal values from a solution by means of cementation

Improved method adapted for the continuous precipitation of metal cement (especially copper cement) from an aqueous solution of a first metal (such as copper) mixed with pieces of second metal (such as iron) which is less noble than such first metal. The first metal cement depositing on the second metal pieces is loosened therefrom by means of constant but regulated movement of such pieces, and is separated and collected from the mixture.

Method and apparatus for precipitating metal cement

A reactant gas is mixed intimately with a liquid and/or particulate solution in a pressurized container and agitated with high energy. Mixing occurs initially by spraying the liquid and gas together to form an emulsion with great surface contact between the reactants, and the emulsion mix is improved and maintained by agitating in the container. The container is carried on oscillatable supports and is driven by an imbalance drive for vertical oscillation in any of several configurations. Loose mixing balls or bodies are optionally carried in the container to increase the agitation and to grind solid particles carried into the solution. The grinding bodies also source protective reaction-deposited layers from the solid particles to speed the reaction. Pressure and temperature of the process is readily controlled.
