A method for producing glass vials, in particular pharmaceutical vials or pharmaceutical ampoules, from a glass tube is provided, the method including the following steps: (a) rotating the glass tube about a longitudinal axis thereof; (b) locally heating the glass tube from one side by means of at least one burner to at least the softening temperature of the glass; (c) reducing the diameter by pressing at least one forming body laterally against the heated region; and (d) separating the glass tube by means of a burner. A glass vial produced in such a way releases a reduced amount of alkali in accordance with ISO 4802 and has a decreased delamination tendency. Furthermore, in the hot-formed peripheral region, the alkali content is only slightly reduced when compared with the alkali content in the glass interior.

The borosilicate glass for pharmaceutical packaging has a transmission &#x3c4; in the visible range of more than 80% at a wavelength of 400 nm, a transmission &#x3c4; in the UV range of at most 0.1% at wavelengths under 260 nm (each at a sample thickness of 1 mm), a transformation temperature Tg of 550&#xb0; C. to 590&#xb0; C. and a processing temperature Vof 1100&#xb0; C. to 1200&#xb0; C. The glass has a composition, in wt. % on an oxide basis, of SiO, 60-80; BO, 5-15; AlO, 2-10; TiO, 0.5-7; &#x3a3; LiO+KO+NaO, 3-10; &#x3a3; alkaline earth oxides, 0.5-10; ZrO, 0-3; and FeO, 0-0.2. The glass is suitable for packaging UV-sensitive substances but nevertheless permits optical quality control.

The method of making a vacuum tube collector or X-ray tube, which includes a matching glass-metal joint, includes providing a glass tube () made of a glass with a composition, in percent by weight on the basis of oxide content, consisting of BO, 8-11.5; AlO, 5-9; NaO, 5-9; KO, 0-5; CaO, 0.4-1.5; balance, SiO; and bonding, preferably fusing or melting, an end portion of the glass tube () with a metal part () in order to bond or attach the glass tube to the metal part, thus forming a long-lasting glass-metal joint. Packaging of tubes or rods is disclosed. The tubes or rods consist of a brittle material such as glass or ceramics. In a method for packaging, the tubes or rods are arranged in one package in the tightest possible packaging form. This package is encased by a hood preferably consisting of a film of synthetic material which is fitted over the package under stress and which thereby locks the tubes or rods in position. A plurality of such packages can be stacked on a conventional pallet and can be encased by an additional hood locking this stack in position.
