A safety and arming unit for a fuse includes a firing chain having first and second firing devices defining an intermediate space therebetween and a barrier blocking the intermediate space in a safe position. The firing chain is brought into an armed position by a releasing movement vacating the intermediate space. First and second mutually independent securing devices lock the barrier in the safe position and execute an unlocking action based on two mutually independent physical arming parameters. A compact and very reliable safety and arming unit can be achieved in this way.

Safety and arming unit for a fuse

A safety and arming unit with a safe separation distance device (), which acts as a function of a free-flight incident flow and temperature, for the fuze () of a projectile (), which fuze is hermetically sealed from environmental influences, has, as a measurement device for the cooling, as a function of the incident flow, of a conductor through which current passes, in the heating circuit () of a resistant heating element () which is fitted flat on the fuze casing surface (), an electronic current measurement apparatus () which is connected upstream of an evaluation circuit (), in order to ram a firing circuit. Two heating elements (&#x2033;), which are fed in the same way, are preferably arranged one behind the other in the incident flow direction (), and, additionally as an environmental temperature sensor, a comparison heating element (') which is not influenced by the incident flow (). This results in a reliable safe separation distance, even for slow projectiles (), without adversely affecting their aerodynamic behaviour and independently of the environmental atmosphere.

Safety and arming unit for the fuze of a projectile

A safety and arming unit () which is designed in particular for an electrical fuze circuit () does not reliably respond just to lateral loads on one side, but responds only to centrifugal forces produced by the spin during free flight, in that two contact pairs (--) which are connected electrically in parallel with one another via rings () and are arranged diametrically opposite one another on a cross-sectional plane of the fuze () are both no longer electrically conductively bridged at the same time by the bolt () because, just by virtue of the centrifugal force, both bolts () are simultaneously moved radially outwards from their short-circuit safety positions in their blind holes (), which are oriented transversely with respect to the rotation axis ().

Safety and arming unit for a spinning projectile fuze

A projectile fuze () having fuze electronics in which the time of flight (T) can be programmed, having a timer/counter which counts up to the programmed time of flight (T)&#x2014;minus a defined time value (&#x394;t)&#x2014;and then charges an electrical firing circuit, and having a mechanical safety and arming unit () which switches a firing chain to the armed position after a specific time interval. The firing chain has an electrical detonator (), a fuze needle (), a piercing detonator () and a booster charge (). The projectile fuze () has a pyrotechnic force element (), which is interconnected with the fuze electronics and mechanically blocks the safety and arming unit () until the time of flight (T) minus the predetermined time value (&#x394;t) is reached, after which the electrical firing circuit is charged and the safety and arming unit () is unlocked to the armed position by initiation of the force element ().

A mortar fuse includes a fan wheel rotated in response to motion of the mortar fuse after the mortar has been launched. The fan wheel rotates a helix on which an activation wheel is mounted. The activation wheel moves in a path along the axis of the helix in response to rotation of the helix and eventually impacts against, and pierces, an acid container. Battery acid flows from the container and into battery cells, to energize the battery. The activation wheel includes a magnetic material. A coil is disposed along the path of travel of the activation wheel so that electric energy is generated in the coil as the magnetic activation wheel moves therepast. The electric energy operates a counter which controls a time function of the mortar fuse.
