The invention relates to an electric steering lock wherein a permanent magnet () and two different Hall sensors () are used to recognise a locking and an unlocking position. The pole transition () of the magnet () is oriented in the direction of the lift (). In order to increase efficiency, one sensor () is south-pole active and the other () is north-pole active. The sensors () are arranged in an intermediate area () between both end positions () of the pole transition () of the permanent magnet () and are disposed at a defined end distance () from both end positions (). At said end distance (), the N-active sensor () is oriented towards the north pole and the S-active sensor () is oriented towards the south pole of the permanent magnet. Said end distance () corresponds to the distance at which the magnetic flow density () of the permanent magnet () is at least identical to the threshold value () required to turn on () the N or-S-active sensor () at the highest temperature occurring during the use thereof.

During manual activation of an activation switch, authorization data are transmitted from a key to a lock. A steering lock unlocks the steering if the authorization data correspond to reference data. The ignition is then switched on and the steering lock is deenergzied as long as the ignition remains switched on. Consequently, the steering lock cannot be activated inadvertently during operation.

In order to identify the position of a movable element, such as a lock bolt, a resonant circuit is subjected to the element or a part that moves with the element. The resonant circuit is thereby damped by the element in a position-dependent manner and oscillates in one end position of the element but is damped too greatly in the other end position. A microprocessor controls the switching on and the respective operating point of a transistor in such a way that switching hysteresis is obtained. The operating point can be automatically readjusted in an adaptation phase.
