A method for producing a water/oil repellent composition can produce an article which is excellent in the oil repellency while maintaining the water repellency and the heavy-rain durability. The method includes mixing an emulsion of a polymer having from 10 to 50 mass % of units based on a monomer having a perfluoroalkyl group per all units and an emulsion of a monomer component containing at least 80 mass % of a monomer having a perfluoroalkyl group so that the proportion of the mass of the polymer will be from 50 to 99 mass % per the sum of the mass of the polymer and the total mass of the monomer component and then polymerizing the monomer component. The monomer component includes emulsified particles in the emulsion of the monomer component. The emulsified particles have an average particle size of from 50 to 600 nm.

To provide a fluorinated copolymer comprising, in specific ratios, units derived from F(CF)CHCHOC(O)C(CH)&#x2550;CH, units derived from vinyl chloride, units derived from vinylidene chloride, units derived from an alkyl (meth)acrylate having a Calkyl group, and units derived from a monomer having no fluoroalkyl group and having a cross-linkable functional group, wherein units derived from F(CF)CHCHOC(O)C(CH)&#x2550;CH(wherein n is an integer of from 1 to 5) are in at most a specific ratio; a process for producing such a fluorinated copolymer; a water repellent composition containing such a fluorinated copolymer; and an article treated with such a water repellent composition.

To provide a water/oil repellent composition which can impart sufficient post-air-drying water/oil repellency to the surface of an article, and which presents a low environmental impact, and an article having its surface treated with the water/oil repellent composition. A water/oil repellent composition comprising a copolymer (A) having structural units based on a monomer (a), structural units based on a monomer (b), structural units based on a monomer (c) and/or structural units based on a monomer (d); and an aqueous medium (B) containing water, and a film-forming assistant (x) and/or a film-forming assistant (y). Monomer (a): a monomer having a Cpolyfluoroalkyl group, monomer (b): vinylidene chloride, monomer (c): a monomer, the homopolymer of which has a glass transition temperature of at least 20&#xb0; C., monomer (d): a monomer having a crosslinkable functional group, film-forming assistant (x): a specific amide solvent, and film-forming assistant (y): a specific glycol solvent.
