An image generating apparatus includes a first generator configured to obtain a first image using a first camera with a first angle of view, a second generator configured to obtain a second image using a second camera with a second angle of view wider than the first angle of view, and a generator configured to generate an observation image using the first image and the second image. The observation image is observable as a double image in which the first image and the second image are superimposed on each other in an area that contains a center of the first image.

A zoom lens includes a first lens unit having a negative refractive power, a second lens unit having a positive refractive power, and a third lens unit having a positive refractive power. Each lens unit moves during zooming. The first lens unit consists of two lenses, the second lens unit consists of, in order from the object side to the image side, a positive lens, a positive lens, a negative lens, and a positive lens, and the third lens unit consists of one lens. A focal length of the entire zoom lens at a wide-angle end (fw), a focal length of the first lens unit (f), a focal length of the second lens unit (f), a focal length of the positive lens included in the second lens unit (fG), and amounts of movement (m, m) of the second lens unit and the third lens unit during zooming are appropriately set.

A lateral magnification of the second lens unit at a wide angle end, a focal length of the first lens unit, a focal length of the third lens unit, a focal length of the entire zoom lens at the wide angle end, and a moving amount of the first lens unit along the optical axis from the wide angle end to a telephoto end are set appropriately based on predetermined conditional expressions.
