A method and system for changing the power state of a portable electronic device is disclosed. A portable electronic device may be powered up or powered down responsive to a user interaction with the portable electronic device. The user interaction may be an insertion of a stylus or other user interface object into a housing of the portable electronic device. Alternatively, the user interaction may be a removal of a stylus or other user interface object from the housing of the portable electronic device. The user interaction may be a rotation of a cover of the portable electronic device.

Method and system for changing the power state of a portable electronic device

A system and method for automatically managing connections between a mobile device and one or more available networks (including dedicated connections), as a user changes locations, is disclosed. The connection manager determines the connection profiles and assigns an availability and priority to each available connection profile. As is well known, mobile devices have a lot of possibilities to connect to different networks and there are many protocols that dictate such connections. The connection manager feature determines the most appropriate profile to connect to an available network. In the event that an initial attempt to connect fails, the connection manager attempts a connection based on the next available profile with the highest priority, until a connection is established or there are no more available profiles. The connection manager uses algorithms for searching for a connection profile that fits criteria or search string that is specified and other parameters such as availability, priority, and usability. The system and method uses a format for connection profile representation that facilitates easy manipulation at the application level. By this format, connection profiles may be easily exchanged between remote devices. Also, the connection manager facilitates remote configuration and administering of connection profiles.

System and method of managing connections with an available network

An electronic system includes an electronic display device and a communication port. Each display mode corresponds to a particular position of the communication port relative to a line of sight of a user. In one embodiment, the communication port is an infrared communication port. Each display mode corresponds to a particular display orientation. The electronic display device displays visual data in the particular display orientation corresponding to the display mode of the electronic system. In one embodiment, the electronic system is a palmtop computer system such as a personal digital assistant.

Reorienting display on portable computing device

A method and apparatus for automatic power-up and power-down of an electronic device is disclosed. More specifically, an electronic device may be automatically powered-up in response to removal of a user interface object from a portion of a housing of the electronic device. The electronic device may be placed in a power conservation mode when the user interface object is placed in the portion of the housing of the electronic device. The electronic device may include a cover operable to cover a display device of the electronic device, where the electronic device may be automatically powered-up in response to uncovering the display device. The electronic device may be placed in a power conservation mode when the display device is covered by the cover.

Method and apparatus for automatic power-up and power-down of an electronic device

Digits entered by a user are compared against phone numbers maintained in a lists such as address book, phone book, most recent calls, and most often called lists, etc. A number in the lists having matching digits corresponding the digits entered by the user is selected. The user entered digits are displayed in a normal font, and remaining digits from the selected number are displayed in a reverse or highlighted font. In one embodiment, if multiple matches occur, a scroll button allows the user to scroll through the each of the matched numbers. Alternatively, a drop down menu displays the matched numbers in a user selectable format.

Intelligent dialing scheme for telephony application

A method and system for protecting portable computer data from unauthorized transfer or using portable computers to download unauthorized data. The invention is applicable to any computer capable of transferring data, but in one embodiment a portable computer is described. Authorization is enabled by an interface permitting synchronization of the portable computer with a host computer by authentication of the particular portable computer identity. For instance, in one embodiment, when a portable computer is docked with a compatible interface connected to a host desktop computer, it is sensed and identified by the interface. If the particular portable computer identity is authenticated as authorized for that desktop, then synchronization will be enabled by the interface. The computers may then transfer data. However, if the identity is not an authorized one, then authentication will not occur, synchronization is correspondingly disabled, and data transfer is prevented. Various systems can enable the identity authentication.

Security method and apparatus for controlling the data exchange on handheld computers

A time zone management system and method for a date-book like application. A user can associate a time zone with an event or appointment, especially on a palmtop computer. The event can be associated with the time zone by selecting the time zone as an attribute from a details menu, or other suitable user interface mechanism or other mechanism. The user can select a display time zone, and all events to be displayed are translated to the display time zone to be displayed on the palmtop computer.

A method and system for automatic power-up and automatic power-down of a computer system based on the position and/or rotation of an associated stylus and/or hinge. In one embodiment, the computer system is a portable computer having a logic board, a display screen, a digitizer and a receiving slot for an associated stylus. When the stylus is removed from the receiving slot, a switch automatically turns full power onto the computer system thereby allowing a user full use of the computer without requiring an on/off button to be pressed. When the stylus is inserted back into the receiving slot, the switch automatically returns the computer to a power reduction mode where one or all of the components of the computer are powered down. Again, the power reduction mode is entered without requiring the user to press the on/off button. The switch can be made of a single detector or a dual detector combination and can be of a mechanical, electro-magnetic, optical or electrical nature. In another embodiment, the stylus-based automatic power-up and power-down features work in concert with other power-up and power-down mechanisms of the computer, such power-on interrupts, the on/off button, and time-out power off modes. In another embodiment, the stylus is a hinge attached to a cover that can be rotated to protect the computer or rotated away to use the computer. When rotated to cover, the switch automatically powers down the computer. When rotated out for computer use, the switch automatically powers up the computer.

An electronic system includes an electronic display device and a communication port. Each display mode corresponds to a particular position of the communication port relative to a line of sight of a user. In one embodiment, the communication port is an infrared communication port. Each display mode corresponds to a particular display orientation. The electronic display device displays visual data in the particular display orientation corresponding to the display mode of the electronic system. In one embodiment, the electronic system is a palmtop computer system such as a personal digital assistant. A user can selectively operate the electronic system in any one of the multiple display modes for communication with a second electronic system via the communication port. The user positions the electronic system such that the communication port is located in a position facilitating communication with the second electronic system via the communication port. The user selects a particular display mode such that to align the user's line of sight with the display orientation of the electronic display device. In one embodiment, the electronic system includes one or more display mode controls for enabling the user to select a particular display mode. In a second embodiment, the electronic system includes a display re-orientation selector for enabling the user to select a particular display mode. The display re-orientation selector is implemented as a graphical button displayed on the electronic display device.

A method and apparatus for indicating information to a user of a palmtop computer. Illuminatable hard buttons are disclosed that are operable for performing functions. The hard buttons are selectively illuminated to indicate information to a user that relates to the function performed when the bard button is pressed. The selective illumination of hard buttons to indicate information that relates to the function that is performed when the hard button is pressed conveys information to the user in a manner that is easily understood by the user. In one embodiment, whether or not the button is illuminated and the color of the illumination, convey information about the function that is to be performed when the button is pressed.

A computer implemented method of implementing a touch screen user interface in conjunction with sensors for a computer system. A touchscreen area is provided for accepting text input strokes and for accepting icon manipulation strokes. A sensor is provided adjacent to the touchscreen area for registering sensor actuations from a user. In implementing the user interface, user input strokes are accepted into the touchscreen input area. User input strokes into touchscreen input area are interpreted as text input strokes when the sensor is actuated by the user during the user input strokes. User input strokes into the touchscreen input area are interpreted as icon manipulation strokes and not text input strokes when the sensor is not actuated by the user during the user input strokes. The nature of the sensor actuation is configured in order to require a deliberate touching, holding, grasping, or the like, to register an actuation of the sensor in order to distinguish between text input strokes and icon manipulation strokes, but not require so significant a user actuation as to interfere with a fluid and intuitive text entry process of the user. Interpreted input strokes can be rapidly displayed as characters on the touchscreen when the sensor is actuated by the user. An audible feedback can be generated to confirm the icon manipulation when the sensor is not actuated by the user. Similarly, a visual feedback can be generated to confirm the icon manipulation when the sensor is not actuated by the user.

Method and system for a full screen user interface and data entry using sensors to implement handwritten glyphs

A method and electronic system for viewing a Web page on a small-sized electronic display device. The small-sized electronic display device is coupled to an electronic system, e.g., a palmtop computer system includes the small-sized electronic display device. The present invention includes a method of individually displaying each frame of a Web page on a small-sized electronic display device such that a user utilizing the small-sized electronic display device can conveniently view and navigate Web pages. A user requests to view a particular Web page and an HTML file corresponding to the particular Web page is retrieved. If the Web page includes a plurality of frames, frame layout information is extracted from the HTML file. The frame layout information is used to generate a frame representation, wherein the frame representation includes a plurality of geometric frame identifiers. Each geometric frame identifier corresponds to one of the plurality of frames. In one embodiment, the frame representation is a Web page. The frame representation is displayed. In one embodiment, a user selects the geometric frame identifier which corresponds to the frame the user desires to view on the small-sized electronic display device. In a second embodiment, a plurality of frame criteria is applied to each frame to automatically select a frame. Once the geometric frame identifier corresponding to the desired frame is selected, an HTML file associated with the desired frame is retrieved, read, and displayed on the small-sized electronic display device.
