The present invention provides a nonwoven web prepared from multicomponent fibers which are partially split. The partially split multicomponent fibers have at least one component of the multicomponent fiber separated from the remaining components of the multicomponent fiber along a first section of the longitudinal length of the multicomponent fibers. Along a second section of the longitudinal length of the multicomponent fibers the components of the multicomponent fibers remain together as a unitary fiber structure. In addition, part of the second section of the multicomponent fibers is bonded to part of a second section of an adjacent multicomponent fiber.

Nonwoven web and filter media containing partially split multicomponent fibers

There is provided a resilient, three dimensional material having fibrous texture and appearance and capable of fluid handling. It consists of a top surface and a bottom surface wherein fiber-like elements typically extend from one surface to the other forming flat to undulating surfaces characterized by a multiplicity of interconnected fluid passageways. Deformed, discontinuous film-like or encapsulated regions connect fiber-like elements and stabilize the material. The material of this invention is unique based on the three principle characteristics which are communicated in this application: 1) f(&#x3c8;)&#x3c;0.87, 2) SA/VV&#x3c;186 cm/cm, and 3) caliper&#x3c;0.150 inches. This material is useful for a number of purposes, such as for use as a liner for personal care products like diapers, absorbent underpants, swim wear, feminine hygiene products, adult incontinence products and the like. The properties of the material may be tailored within the ranges of this invention to deliver optimal material performance for use in specific personal care products.

Creped materials

The present invention is generally directed to base webs that are creped after a bonding material has been applied to at least one side of the web according to a predetermined pattern. According to the present invention, the bonding material contains a creping adhesive mixed with composite particles. The composite particles generally have a median particle size of less than about 5 microns and a particle size distribution of less than about 10 microns.

Creping adhesive and products and process incorporating same

A biaxially extendible, breathable laminate having liquid barrier properties and low retractive force. The laminate includes a nonwoven web neck-stretched in a first direction to impart extendibility of the web in a second direction mutually perpendicular with the first direction, and a film that is extendible in the second direction. The film can be a breathable, microporous film, and can either be an inelastic film stretched to form rugosities in the second direction, or can be made of an extendible polymer that is extendible in the second direction. Using an appropriate elastomeric lamination and/or creping adhesive, the laminate is creped to produce extendibility in the first direction with some retractive force. The biaxial extendible laminate is particularly useful as an outer cover for diapers and other personal care products.

Biaxially extendible material

A method of making sanitary paper products from newspapers. The method includes the steps of: (a) pulping newspapers in water with agitation to produce a pulp slurry, the fiber in the newspapers having an oil content ranging from about 0.025% to about 2.0%, by weight, and the slurry having a consistency between about 3% and about 18% and a pH below about 8.0; (b) adding a surfactant to the pulp slurry and maintaining the pulp slurry at a temperature above about 100.degree. F. for at least 15 minutes such that a substantial quantity of the oil in the old newspaper is retained; (c) increasing the consistency of the slurry to between about 3.5% and about 18%; and (d) using the treated pulp as a source of fibers in a paper making process to produce sanitary paper products.
