A method may include receiving, by respective processing circuitry of one or more power modules of an industrial automation device, a control signal from a controller of the industrial automation device. The power modules may include driver circuitry and a power converter that may provide power to a motor based on the signal. The method may also include, detecting, by the respective processing circuitry, a lack of communication from the controller based on the signal, and, in response to detecting the lack of communication from the controller, transmitting, by the respective processing circuitry, a first command to gating signal enable circuitry to disable the driver circuitry, and transmitting, by the respective processing circuitry, a second command to driver power circuitry to prevent power from being provided to the driver circuitry.

Functional safety techniques for industrial automation devices

Motor drive diagnostic and control methods and apparatus are provided in which rectifier and inverter switching devices are individually monitored for malfunctions, and detected malfunctions initiate implementation of a safety function to signal a drive controller to shut down non-safety-related processing, to discontinue command pulse signaling to the switching devices, and to disable optical transmitters between the drive controller and the rectifier and inverter switches, and an input contactor or other switching circuit is opened to disconnect input power from the motor drive after implementation of the safety function.

Power structure diagnostic method and apparatus for improved motor drive diagnostic coverage

A control system for controlling and synchronizing a plurality of medium-voltage vacuum contactors comprises a two-level network structure. A dedicated network includes a plurality of servant control units operably coupled to the vacuum contactors and configured to ascertain a plurality of different data and conditions thereof. In addition, the dedicated network includes a master control unit in serial communication with the servant control units and configured to send and receive communications therewith. The master control unit is operably coupled to a control network including a plurality of various control devices. The master control unit is configured to send predetermined data received from the servant control units to the control network. The two-level network structure enables relatively jitter free communication on the dedicated network while not overwhelming the control network with unnecessary data. The system is further configured to diagnose and prevent a variety of different vacuum contactor failures.

Multi-vacuum contactor control system

An air cooled switching unit for a motor drive includes a plurality electrical switches and a plurality of heat pipe assemblies. Each heat pipe assembly includes a thermally and electrically conductive evaporator, a condenser, and at least one heat pipe extending between the evaporator and condenser. Each of the switches is abutted with an evaporator of at least one of the heat pipe assemblies for conduction of both electrical power and heat between the switch and the evaporator. Each heat pipe assembly further includes an electrically conductive base abutted with the evaporator, and the air cooled switching unit further includes a plurality of power lugs each connected to a base of a respective one of the heat pipe assemblies for input or output of electrical power to the base and the evaporator plate abutted with the base. Each heat pipe assembly includes at least one evaporator defined by a metallic plate. The condenser of each heat pipe assembly includes a plurality of parallel spaced-apart cooling fins. The at least one heat pipe of each heat pipe assembly includes a sealed pipe containing a phase-change material for transferring heat from said evaporator to said condenser. The at least one heat pipe includes a first end located in the metallic plate and a second end in contact with and extending through the cooling fins of the condenser. A temperature feedback system derives air flow velocity through the condenser.
