A cable television system automatically locates set-top terminals within the system with respect to the specific equipment through which the set-top terminal communicates with the system controller. This location of the terminal is used to configure the terminal to operate properly within the system and with respect to its physical location and to improve the overall operating efficiency of the system. Identifying the location of terminals can also facilitate better trouble-shooting and characterization of the cable plant by providing logical and physical network topology information. Each terminal's attributes are also registered with the system controller. The controller can also effect automatic configuration of set-top terminals purchased through a retail outlet and installed by consumers.

Method and system for automatically locating set-top terminals within a cable television system

An enlargement feature of a graphical user interface (GUI) is disclosed. When a portion of a digital image displayed in the GUI is selected for enlargement, an enlarged version of the selected portion is displayed adjacent to the remaining portion of the original image that was not selected for enlargement. The digital image may include a plurality of image portions (e.g., individual display windows) selectable for enlargement, such as those found in a CATV electronic programming guide (EPG). In one embodiment, hidden supplemental data corresponding to the selected portion is only revealed in the enlarged version of the selected portion, so that it can be more easily viewed. In another embodiment, an enlargement feature application program is downloaded to a local device that controls the GUI, in response to a subscriber accepting an offer presented by a service provider.

Method and apparatus for preserving, enlarging and supplementing image content displayed in a graphical user interface

This method and system allow a subscriber to a cable television service to receiving a listing or menu of programming available for that subscriber's set-top terminal to upgrade or enhance the features available over the cable system. A Directory of Services (DoS) message is transmitted over the cable system to the subscriber's set-top terminal. The terminal can then display for the subscriber the menu of programming available. This display may include a price for downloading each programming object. The subscriber can then, using a remote control unit or a user input device on the terminal, direct the set-top terminal to acquire a listed programming object. The DoS message will provide information enabling the set-top terminal to download the indicated programming object from the cable system in response to the subscriber's input. The subscriber can then have immediate access to upgraded or enhanced programming, the purchase of which is billed to the subscriber's account.

Method and system of identifying software and firmware objects available for download over a network such as a cable television system

User customizable advanced closed caption capbilities are provided using existing closed caption information contained in a television signal. The invention allows the user to override the closed caption presentation format as selected by the originator (e.g., programmer or broadcaster), in order to select alternate presentation attributes based on the user's preference. Closed caption information is extracted (e.g., by a closed caption processor from a television signal, which television signal also contains corresponding audiovisual programming. The processor determines whether one or more user selected attributes have been set. At least one user selected attribute is applied to at least a portion of the closed caption information via a closed caption driver. The closed caption information is displayed via a display driver and graphics processor on a display device in accordance with the user selected attributes via a graphical overlay on top of the audiovisual programming.

Methods and apparatus for the provision of user selected advanced close captions

A versatile user interface device and associated system includes a consumer device, such as a set-top terminal, and a user interface device, such as a versatile remote control unit for sending command signals to the set-top terminal. The system enables application specific real-time programming of the remote control device. The system incorporates Versatile Remote Control Manager (VRCM) software that is invoked by the application via user selection. The VRCM enables application specific real-time re-mapping of the key code values for the operating keys of the remote control device, such as fixed keys and/or soft keys on a touch screen display device in order to enable simpler user interface interaction and navigation experience.

A method and system are provided for impulse purchasing of services over a communication network, such as a cable or satellite television network. Such services can include games or information accompanying television programming, home-shopping, e-mail services, streaming media and the like. Security is provided through entitlements generated by the access controller and entitlement tokens generated by a secure processor. The secure processor is located at a subscriber terminal through which a subscriber orders and obtains the services. A token is generated when the subscriber either selects the service, if pre-authorized, or when the service is purchased on impulse. The token is secure and signed, and may be used by a policy/proxy server subtending to the Network Operator's ISP and associated services to further facilitate offering these services to the subscribers.

Impulse pay per use method and system for data and multimedia services

In a system for authenticating a downloaded software object, a technique is provided to determine whether a failed authentication resulted from a suspect downloaded object or a suspect signature for the downloaded object which was communicated separately. A secret compact transformation function that operates on the signature is used to generate a value indicative of the signature at the software object transmission facility. The inverse function is used at the user terminal, such as a television set-top box, which receives the downloaded software object. Multiple transmission of the value can be provided for redundancy. The system is particularly useful in analyzing actual or attempted attacks on the security of the software object download scheme.

Detection of suspect software objects and signatures after failed authentication

A system for inserting commercials into an audiovisual bit stream by providing cue commands in response to cue tones in a pre-existing analog signal, and/or in response to control signals from an uplink (/programmer/network) site or headend (/affiliate). Firmware upgrades are provided to a digital encoder to facilitate generating spliceable bit streams and generation of cue_commands. This enables commercial insertion at an uplink site (/programmer/network) as well as at a cable television headend (/affiliate). The system provides functional compatibility between a digital bit stream and the analog cue tones. The cue commands are preferably carried in the transport layer of the bit stream so there is no need to decode and process several layers of the bit stream. Accordingly, a new commercial insertion capability can be added to existing uplink and headend equipment in a backward compatible manner minimizing upgrade-related expenses, yet allowing different splicing techniques to be employed depending on cost-performance tradeoffs in terms of desired post-splicing audiovisual quality.

Apparatus and method for digital advertisement insertion in a bitstream

A method for providing authentication, authorization and access control of software object residing in digital set-top terminals creates a fingerprint (&ldquo;signature&rdquo;) for each software object, associates each fingerprint with a service tier, encodes each association and creates an association table containing the information and downloads the association table to the digital set-top terminal. In addition, the method utilizes an entitlement management message, sent to each set-top terminal, indicating what software objects the set-top terminal may utilize, and provides a system routine at the digital set-top terminal that is invoked whenever software object is about to be utilized. The entitlement management message contains the access rights given to a particular set-top terminal, which must match the software object's access requirements for the software object to be utilized. The entitlement management message may also contain set-top terminal resource control access rights that a given software object may utilize. When the software object requires the utilization of a set-top resource, a second conditional access routine may be invoked to determine the authorization rights for using the resource. Measures to protect such means are also described. As such the method provides multiple system cable operators (MSO's) with additional capabilities to maintain secure control of features and applications running on their networks and within the associated set-top terminals.

An adaptive protocol CATV communication system is embodied in a decentralized communication arrangement, wherein the communicating nodes are located at various points within the CATV system. Each communicating node has two protocol syntax processing components: 1) a protocol syntax processor (PSP) which is a downloadable software component that processes of incoming frames; and 2) an adaptive protocol processor which is a fixed software component that oversees the replacement of an old PSP with a new PSP. A master node initiates the migration from an old PSP to a new PSP by sending the new PSP image frames to a slave node. After the new PSP image is complete, the slave node enters a verification mode to test the new PSP. The master node sends special test frames to the slave node to verify the operability of the new PSP by using the old PSP. The results of the verification are conveyed back to the master node to take the appropriate actions. The CATV system remains fully operational for the duration of the PSP upgrade since the frequencies allocated for video programming differ from the frequencies allocated for data transmission.

A network architecture for delivery of broadcast and interactive digital services over a hybrid fiber-coax distribution system. The network includes at least one remote/local hub that communicates with a plurality of video information providers (VIPs) and a plurality of headends/central offices. Each headend communicates with a plurality of settop terminals. The hub includes a backbone subnetwork which provides the physical medium for components within the hub to communicate with each other, and for entities located outside the hub, such as the VIPs and the headends, to communicate with, and through, the hub. The hub processes broadcast digital information services from a VIP and distributes the services directly to the plurality settop terminals. The network architecture permits two-way transparent data transport service between the VIPs and the video information users. Through frequency division multiplexing, the network architecture facilitates analog signal distribution so both analog and digital services can be distributed.

The hybrid medium access control MAC system is configurable to the type of communication required to support a desired application or service. The MAC system analyzes services requested from a settop terminal, or a network controller client, and determines the best MAC component for transmitting signals upstream based on the resources required by the service and the available network resources. A portion of the upstream channel spectrum is allocated to each of the MAC components: 1) POP; 2) assigned static TDMA; 3) assigned dynamic multi-rate TDMA; and 4) random slot reservation-dynamic slot allocation TDMA. Depending upon the communication requirements of the service desired, the configurable MAC system will select the MAC component best suited to support the service. A frequency agile transmitter is then tuned to the channel which has been preallocated for the selected MAC component(s). As communication traffic varies over time, the system reallocates portions of the upstream channel spectrum among the different MAC components and may also reconfigure a specific MAC component.
