A method of bank to bank trimming for a locomotive engine during steady state operation comprises receiving a plurality of operating parameter signals, receiving a fuel quantity signal for each of a standard cylinder bank and a donor cylinder bank, providing a trim map, determining whether the engine is operating in a steady state condition based on the plurality of operating parameter signals, determining a target fuel injection duration for each of the standard cylinder bank and the donor cylinder bank if the engine is operating in a steady state condition, and adjusting an actual fuel injection duration to equal the target fuel injection duration for the standard cylinder bank and the donor cylinder bank.

Bank to bank trimming system for a locomotive engine

A jacket cooling system for an engine of a locomotive is disclosed. The jacket cooling system may comprise a jacket coolant pump driven by a crankshaft of the engine. The jacket cooling system may further comprise a coolant jacket associated with one or more components of the engine, and a delivery conduit in fluid communication with the outlet of the jacket coolant pump and configured to deliver a coolant from the jacket coolant pump to the coolant jacket. The jacket cooling system may further comprise a bypass circuit configured to divert the coolant away from the delivery conduit and the engine, and an electronically-controlled bypass valve in the bypass circuit. The bypass valve may allow at least some of the coolant to flow through the bypass circuit when a valve position of the bypass valve is at least partially open.

Engine jacket cooling system for locomotive

A cooling system is disclosed for an internal combustion engine. The cooling system may include a first cooling circuit having a first coolant that flows through cooling channels of an engine, and a second cooling circuit having a second coolant that flows through a charge air cooling component. The cooling system may further include a drain line adapted for fluid communication with the first and second cooling circuits. A first temperature responsive valve disposed on the second cooling circuit may be included, the first temperature responsive valve configured to open to allow mixing of the first and second coolants when the temperature of the second coolant is at a preselected minimum temperature. Also included may be a second temperature responsive valve disposed on the drain line and configured to open to drain both cooling circuits when the temperature of the first and second coolants is at a preselected minimum temperature.

An energy recovery system for an engine system is disclosed. The engine system includes an engine, an exhaust conduit configured to receive exhaust gases discharged from the engine, and a first turbocharger coupled to the exhaust conduit to receive exhaust gases from the engine and provides compressed air to the engine. The energy recovery system includes a bypass conduit, a second turbocharger, and an accumulator. The bypass conduit is coupled to the exhaust conduit upstream of the first turbocharger, and facilitates a portion of exhaust gases from the exhaust conduit to bypass the first turbocharger. The second turbocharger is coupled to the bypass conduit, and is driven by the portion of exhaust gases bypassing the first turbocharger to compress air received from an ambient to a first pressure. The accumulator is in fluid communication with the second turbocharger, and stores air received from the second turbocharger at the first pressure.

An Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for an engine system is provided. The EGR system includes an exhaust gas treatment module positioned upstream of an EGR cooler with respect to an exhaust gas flow direction. The exhaust gas treatment module is in selective fluid communication with an exhaust gas line of an engine. The EGR system also includes a bypass line in selective fluid communication with the exhaust gas line of the engine. The EGR system further includes a valve arrangement configured to route an exhaust gas flow through at least one of the exhaust gas treatment module and the bypass line.

An engine system is disclosed. The engine system may have a first bank of cylinders, a second bank of cylinders, a first intake manifold, and a second intake manifold. The engine system may also have a first exhaust manifold connecting the first bank of cylinders to the first and second intake manifolds, a second exhaust manifold connecting the second bank of cylinders to the atmosphere, a plurality of injectors, and a controller. The controller may be configured to inhibit the plurality of injectors associated with a first cylinder subset of the first and second banks of cylinders from firing for a first period of time spanning multiple engine cycles. The controller may also be configured to selectively inhibit the plurality of injectors associated with a second cylinder subset of the first and second banks of cylinders from firing for a second period of time following the first period of time.

An exhaust system is disclosed for use with an engine. The exhaust system may have an exhaust duct, an aftertreatment component disposed within the exhaust duct, and a resistive grid disposed within the exhaust duct at a location upstream of the aftertreatment component. The exhaust system may further have a controller configured to determine a need to heat the aftertreatment component to a threshold temperature, determine a load increase that should be placed on the engine to raise a temperature of exhaust exiting the engine when the aftertreatment component needs to be heated, and determine an amount of electrical power that should be applied to the resistive grid to raise the temperature of the exhaust. The controller may also be configured to selectively implement a combination of engine load increase and application of electrical power to the resistive grid to raise the temperature of exhaust to the threshold temperature.

An exhaust system is disclosed for use with an engine. The exhaust system may have a compression relief valve associated with an engine cylinder. The exhaust system may also have an exhaust gas recirculation passage extending from the compression relief valve to an intake of the engine cylinder.

The combustion face includes a combustion bowl, and an annular piston rim extending circumferentially around the combustion bowl. Inner and outer rim surfaces together comprise a horizontal width of the rim in a ratio of about 1:1 to about 2:1. The inner rim surface includes a chamfer sloping from about 9&#xb0; to about 11&#xb0;, such that a profile of the rim is relieved to limit deflection by the piston of the directly injected fuel toward a cylinder wall.

Piston, engine and operating method for reduced production of particulate matter

An engine system for a machine is disclosed. The engine system may have a first intake manifold configured to distribute air into a first cylinder bank of an engine. The engine system may also have a second intake manifold configured to distribute air into a second cylinder bank of the engine. The engine system may have a first exhaust manifold configured to discharge exhaust from the first cylinder bank to the atmosphere. The engine system may further have a second exhaust manifold configured to discharge exhaust from non-donor cylinders in the second cylinder bank to the atmosphere. In addition, the engine system may have a third exhaust manifold separate from the first and second exhaust manifolds and configured to recirculate exhaust from donor cylinders in the second cylinder bank to the first and second intake manifolds.

Engine system having dedicated donor cylinders for EGR

A system is disclosed for controlling fuel injectors in an internal combustion engine having a plurality of individual engine cylinders with associated pistons. The system includes at least one electronic engine control module configured to control the fuel injectors and having a memory with predetermined injector firing patterns stored therein. The firing patterns specify the fuel injectors to be fired and the fuel injectors to be skipped, in an engine cycle under conditions of reduced power demand. For each engine cycle in a succession of cycles under the reduced power demand condition, the engine control module determines the number of fuel injectors to be fired based upon the reduced power demand data, selects from the stored predetermined firing patterns a firing pattern specifying the injectors to be fired and the injectors to be skipped, and orders the specified fuel injectors to be fired sequentially in accordance with the selected predetermined firing pattern.
