An insulation component for use in an airplane, comprising a first fibrous layer having a first density and a second fibrous layer chemically bound to the first fibrous layer. The second fibrous layer has a second density less than the first density. The first and second fibrous layers comprise a similar material. The first density provides the insulation component with enough rigidity to be self-supporting. The average fiber diameter of the fibers in the first and second fibrous layers is less than 2 μm.

Reinforced insulation product and system suitable for use in an aircraft

A burn through and flame propagation resistant system, includes a sheet of burn through and flame propagation resistant paper made of aramid fibers, mica flakes, and aramid fibrid binder; and one or more sheets of polymeric film, preferably, flame propagation resistant polymeric film, bonded to at least one major surface of the sheet of burn through and flame propagation resistant paper to form a laminated sheet. Preferably, for many applications, the system is also water vapor transmission resistant with the sheet or sheets of polymeric film or a coating providing the water vapor transmission resistance. The burn through and flame propagation resistant paper and/or polymeric film(s) may have major surface(s) coated with a heat sealable adhesive, e.g. for securing the laminated sheet to itself or another laminated sheet to form a bag or envelope for encapsulating insulation. The laminated sheet may be used as a covering or bag that encapsulates insulation material or as a layer overlaying, intermediate or underlaying one or more layers of insulation material. As an alternative to the laminated sheet, the system may include a sheet of burn through and flame propagation resistant paper which is treated with a heat and/or ultrasonically sealable, moisture and flame propagation resistant polyvinylfluoride water based emulsion.

Burn through and flame propagation resistant layer or covering

An encapsulated insulation composite system for increasing the burn through resistance of an aircraft fuselage includes: an insulation layer of glass fiber or foam insulation and a coating or interleaf barrier layer of a high temperature resistant material and/or a coating or barrier layer of a high temperature resistant material on an outer major surface of the insulation layer of the composite and a film encapsulating the composite. Preferably, the barrier layer or layers include a reflective mineral, such as a reflective mineral containing coating carried on a sheet material. Preferably, the encapsulating film is a polymeric film such as a polyimide film.

Burn through resistant systems for transportation, especially aircraft

A burn through resistant nonwoven mat and cover film composite for use in a thermal and/or acoustical insulation blanket system, are, preferably, made up of non-respirable and/or biosoluble base fibers and capable of retaining their integrity and dimensional stability during 4 minutes of exposure to a fluctuating high pressure flame front at a temperature of 1100&deg; C. examples of non-respirable base fibers which make up the nonwoven mat are quartz fibers; aluminosilicate, aluminoborosilicate or alumina ceramic oxide fibers; partially oxidized pitch based fibers; and partially oxidized polyacrylonitrile fibers having mean diameters greater than 6 microns. Examples of biosoluble fibers are biosoluble glass fibers. Preferably, the nonwoven mats also include a lubricant sizing with a water repellent additive.
