A high-resolution microendoscope system includes a light source, a fiber optic bundle configured to transmit light from the light source to a sample, a disc configured to receive light returned from the sample, the disc having spaced apart segments, the spaced-apart segments being at least one of openings and transparent portions, a first camera configured to capture a first image based at least in part on light passing through the disc, and a second camera configured to capture a second image based at least in part on light reflected from the disc.

A bubble continuous positive airway pressure system may include an adjustable flow generator configured to control a flow rate of air to be delivered to a patient. A pressure-regulated delivery system is configured to control a pressure delivered to the patient interface. The delivery system is operatively connected to a pressure control tube. One end of the pressure control tube is submerged in a liquid. A patient interface is configured to transfer pressure from the pressure control tube to the patient's airway.

The present disclosure relates to the use of a paper medium to measure blood hemoglobin concentration. In certain embodiments, spectrophotometric techniques are used to measure light transmission at specified wavelengths through a paper medium containing a blood sample. The light transmission information is then used in the calculation of blood hemoglobin concentration. In certain embodiments, the paper medium may be chemically treated to lyse the blood sample prior to measurement of the light transmission information.

Vision enhancement system for improved detection of epithelial neoplasia and other conditions

Fluorescence spectral data acquired from tissues in vivo or in vitro is processed in accordance with a multivariate statistical method to achieve the ability to probabilistically classify tissue in a diagnostically useful manner, such as by histopathological classification. The apparatus includes a controllable illumination device for emitting electromagnetic radiation selected to cause tissue to produce a fluorescence intensity spectrum. Also included are an optical system for applying the plurality of radiation wavelengths to a tissue sample, and a fluorescence intensity spectrum detecting device for detecting an intensity of fluorescence spectra emitted by the sample as a result of illumination by the controllable illumination device. The system also include a data processor, connected to the detecting device, for analyzing detected fluorescence spectra to calculate a probability that the sample belongs in a particular classification. The data processor analyzes the detected fluorescence spectra using a multivariate statistical method. The five primary steps involved in the multivariate statistical method are (i) preprocessing of spectral data from each patient to account for inter-patient variation, (ii) partitioning of the preprocessed spectral data from all patients into calibration and prediction sets, (iii) dimension reduction of the preprocessed spectra in the calibration set using principal component analysis, (iv) selection of the diagnostically most useful principal components using a two-sided unpaired student's t-test and (v) development of an optimal classification scheme based on logistic discrimination using the diagnostically useful principal component scores of the calibration set as inputs.

Method for probabilistically classifying tissue in vitro and in vivo using fluorescence spectroscopy

Methods and apparatus for generating multispectral images of tissue. The multispectral images may be used as a diagnostic tool for conditions such as cervical cancer detection and diagnosis. Primary radiation is produced with an illumination source. The primary radiation is filtered to select a first wavelength and a first polarization. Tissue is illuminated with the filtered primary radiation to generate secondary radiation, which is filtered to select a second wavelength and a second polarization. The filtered secondary radiation is collected with a detector, and a plurality of multispectral images of the tissue is generated according to different combinations of first and second wavelengths and first and second polarization with an analysis unit in operable relation with the detector. Apparatus utilizing the invention include endoscopes and colposcopes.

Methods and apparatus for diagnostic multispectral digital imaging

A method and apparatus for characterizing tissue of epithelial lined viscus in vivo including, for example, the endocervical canal. The method comprises illuminating an interior surface of the viscus with electromagnetic radiation wavelengths to produce a plurality of fluorescence intensity spectra, detecting a plurality of emission wavelengths from the fluorescence intensity spectra, and characterizing the epithelial viscus tissue as a function of the emission wavelengths. The apparatus includes a light source of emitting a plurality of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths, an optical probe connected to the light source, the probe being adapted to apply the plurality of electromagnetic radiation wavelengths to an interior surface of epithelial viscus tissue under test and to gather fluorescence emitted from the tissue, a detector connected to the probe for detecting at least one fluorescence spectrum emitted from the tissue under test and a programmed computer connected to the detector for processing the at least one fluorescence spectrum according to a predetermined algorithm to characterize the tissue under test.

Apparatus for the characterization of tissue of epithelial lined viscus

Methods and apparatus for assessing the size of a scattering element of a sample. Primary radiation is generated from a source. The primary radiation is polarized to produce polarized primary radiation. The polarized primary radiation is directed to the sample to generate reflected radiation. The reflected radiation is directed through a polarizer to produce filtered reflected radiation, the polarizer being configured to select reflected radiation parallel and perpendicular to the polarization of the polarized primary radiation. The filtered radiation is detected, and a depolarization ratio is calculated using the detected filtered radiation. The size of the scattering element is calculated using the depolarization ratio.

Methods and apparatus for polarized reflectance spectroscopy

Methods for enhancing contrast during imaging to assess cell and nuclear morphology of a sample. A contrast agent such as acetic acid, toluidine blue, hypertonic saline, hypotonic saline, Lugol's iodine, an absorbing dye, a liposome, or a contrast agent linked to a marker are applied to a sample. The sample is analyzed with an imaging device to create image data, and the sample is diagnosed using the image data.

Enhancing contrast in biological imaging

Methods and apparatus for performing fluorescence and spatially resolved reflectance spectroscopy on a sample. A sample is irradiated with a fluorescence excitation fiber and radiation is collected from the sample with a fluorescence collection fiber and detected to form fluorescence spectra. The sample is also illuminated with a reflectance illumination fiber and reflected light from the sample is collected at a plurality of collection positions and detected to form spatially resolved reflectance spectra. The fibers may form a probe arranged in concentric sections. The spectra are analyzed by pre-processing and reducing the dimensionality of the spectral data.

Combined fluorescence and reflectance spectroscopy

An apparatus and methods for fiber optic confocal imaging systems. A plurality of fibers are in communication with a scan system that controllably deflects incident radiation into the fibers in a raster pattern. An index matching agent reduces specular reflections from the fibers.

Fiber-optic confocal imaging apparatus and methods of use

The present invention involves the use of fluorescence spectroscopy in the diagnosis of cervical cancer and precancer. Using multiple illumination wavelengths, it is possible to (i) differentiate normal or inflamed tissue from squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) and (ii) to differentiate high grade SILs from non-high grade SILs. The detection may be performed in vitro or in vivo. Multivariate statistical analysis was employed to reduce the number of fluorescence excitation-emission wavelength pairs needed to re-develop algorithms that demonstrate a minimum decrease in classification accuracy. Fluorescence at excitation-emission wavelength pairs was used to redevelop and test screening and diagnostic algorithms that have a similar classification accuracy to those that employ fluorescence emission spectra at three excitation wavelengths. Both the full-parameter and reduced-parameter screening algorithms discriminate between SILs and non-SILs with a similar specificity and a substantially improved sensitivity relative to Pap smear screening and differentiate high grade SILs from non-high grade SILs.
