A method includes obtaining, by a processor, a score quantifying an estimated degree to which an instance of an articulatory event-type indicates a state, with respect to a disease, in which the instance was produced. The method further includes, using the score, facilitating, by the processor, a computer-implemented procedure for evaluating the state of a subject based on a test utterance produced by the subject. Other embodiments are also described.

Using optimal articulatory event-types for computer analysis of speech

An encoder determines a compression ratio for compressive sensing and a quantization level used to quantize a media signal based on a target indicator. The encoder accesses compressive sensing measurements performed using the compression ratio and quantizes the compressive sensing measurements based on the quantization level. A decoder receives a compressed signal generated from the signal acquired by the signal acquisition device using the compression ratio and the quantization level. The decoder also receives information indicating the compression ratio or the quantization level. The decoder decompresses the compressed signal based on the compression ratio and the quantization level.

Compressive sensing with joint signal compression and quality control

An image acquisition device compresses a media signal representative of a scene based on a sensing matrix that is a determined by a sensing matrix template and a set of template parameters. The image acquisition device provides the compressed media signal to a receiver and selectively provides a specification of a subset of the set of template parameters to the receiver. The receiver extracts one or more scene descriptors representative of one or more portions of the scene from the compressed media signal using the sensing matrix template without knowledge of the template parameters that are not included in the subset. The template parameters that are not included in the subset are not received by the receiver.

Protecting personal privacy in a video monitoring system

In one example embodiment, a transmitting device includes a memory configured to store computer-readable instructions and a processor configured to execute the computer-readable instructions. The processor is configured to prepare at least one packet, the at least one packet including a portion of a compressed representation of at least one data block, a packet offset value and a block identifier, the block identifier identifying the at least one data block, the packet offset value identifying the portion of the compressed representation of the at least one data block within the compressed representation of the at least one data block and broadcast the at least one packet.

Systems and methods for transmission of compressive sensing data

A method and a system for using compression sensing to provide low data rate transmission and low computational complexity to determine anomalies in video data obtained by a video camera or other motion detection device. The video data is divided into varying sized video blocks based on an anticipated size of objects of interest within the video, and based on a distance between a video camera and the objects of interest. Features are extracted from the video data of each block to detect anomalies if a feature vector is outside of an 'allowed range.' By utilizing varying sized video blocks, anomalies are more effectively and efficiently detected in the video data.

Method and system for modifying compressive sensing block sizes for video monitoring using distance information

A video server or other processing device obtains availability information for a wireless network and modifies a manner in which video segments of a video service are delivered to a user device over the wireless network based on the obtained availability information. The availability information may comprise at least one of network congestion measurement information and transmission pricing information. In an illustrative embodiment, the processing device comprises a video server configured to utilize the availability information to generate a list of video segments available for transmission for at least a portion of the video service, to provide the list of video segments to the user device responsive to a request received from the user device, to receive an additional request from the user device for at least one particular video segment identified in the list, and to provide the requested at least one video segment to the user device.

Video delivery modification based on network availability

A measurement vector of compressive measurements is received. The measurement vector may be derived by applying a sensing matrix to a source signal. At least one first feature vector is generated from the measurement vector. The first feature vector is an estimate of a second feature vector. The second feature vector is a feature vector that corresponds to a translation of the source signal. An anomaly is detected to in the source signal based on the first feature vector.

Methods and apparatuses for detecting anomalies using transform based compressed sensing matrices

A controller in a video headend or other transmission element of a signal distribution system is operative to detect a condition in which unicast transmissions of a given content stream to a plurality of terminals meet a specified threshold. The controller starts a multicast transmission of the given content stream in response to the detected condition, and transitions at least one of the terminals to the multicast transmission. In one embodiment, the controller identifies at least one of the terminals as a terminal that will receive the multicast transmission of the given content stream in place of its unicast transmission prior to one or more of the other terminals receiving the multicast transmission. The controller stops the unicast transmission to the identified terminal if that unicast transmission has already been started, starts the multicast transmission, switches the identified terminal to the multicast transmission, and subsequently transitions one or more of the other terminals to the multicast transmission. The identified terminal may be a leading terminal or a trailing terminal.

Controller providing gradual transition of multiple terminals from unicast transmission

A digital audio broadcasting (DAB) communication system with a decoder buffer specified by a maximum number of encoded frames is disclosed. A predicted number of encoded frames, F, in the decoder is sent to a receiver with audio data. If the decoder buffer level becomes too high, additional bits are allocated to each frame for each of N programs. If the decoder buffer level becomes too low, fewer bits are allocated to each frame for each of the N programs. Fcan also be employed to (i) enable the decoder; and (ii) synchronize the transmitter and the receiver. The receiver fills the decoder buffer with Fframes before commencing decoding frames. The transmitter and receiver clocks may be synchronized with a feedback loop that compares the actual level of the decoder buffer to the predicted value, F, received from the transmitter.

Method and apparatus for frame-based buffer control in a communication system

A method and system for improved error resiliency in Internet protocol Television (IPTV) are provided. Received media stream is encoded in a real-time protocol. The RTP media stream is then reordered in a homogeneous arrangement (e.g., video packets together, audio packets together) such that each RTP packet, which contains video contains data from a single video frame. Furthermore, each RTP packet contains a RTP header extension, which specifies the priority of the data. Audio frame and intra-coded frames (I-frames) are marked as highest priority frames, predictably coded frames (P-frames) are marked as high priority frames, bidirectionally coded frames (B-frames) are marked as lower priority frames with anything else occupying the lowest priority. The media stream is forwarded to the plurality of users, in accordance with the priority of each packet. A subscriber's device requests retransmission of any missing packets.

Prioritized retransmission of internet protocol television (IPTV) packets

A method and apparatus are disclosed for controlling a buffer in a digital audio broadcasting (DAB) communication system. The transmitter predicts the number of encoded frames, F, in the buffer having a limited level and transmits the value, F, to the receiver with the frame. If the transmitter determines that the decoder buffer level is high, the frames being generated by the encoder are small and additional bits are allocated to each frame for each of the N programs. Likewise, if the transmitter determines that the decoder buffer level is becoming low, the frames being generated by the encoder are big and fewer bits are allocated to each frame for each of the N programs. The transmitted predicted buffer level, F, can also be employed to (i) determine when the decoder should commence decoding frames; and (ii) synchronize the transmitter and the receiver clock using feedback depending on the compared level of the decoder to the actual level to F.

In an internet protocol television (IPTV) system, fast channel change (FCC) transactions that experience late multicast joins are handled specially, thereby allowing the system to be provisioned for the vast majority of multicast joins that are within an expected range. During an FCC transaction, the subscriber interface device, such as a set-top box (STB), can determine how long it can wait to join the multicast stream of the new channel before a gap can be predicted to occur in the handover from the FCC unicast to the multicast. If the STB has not joined the multicast stream by the determined time, a recovery procedure is invoked in which the STB sends a RESTART request to the FCC server which, in turn, increases the rate of the FCC unicast as if the FCC transaction were restarted, thus allowing the handover to occur seamlessly. This solution reduces the demands of each FCC transaction, allowing for greater scalability and reduced cost.
