An insertable device, for use with electronic data processing equipment storage units, e.g., disk drives or cassette units. The device includes a housing for insertion at least partially into the storage unit of a size and shape designed to fit the storage unit, an interface disposed in the housing for facilitating the transfer of data between the device and the electronic data processing equipment, and a processor disposed in the housing and operatively connected to the interface, for performing processing of data.

Smart data storage device

An element which can be plugged into an electronic data processing (EDP) device, for receiving a user card which is equipped with components, including at least one of a processor and/or data memory, a frame having an exterior form, which is designed to accommodate the user card, a first interface for transferring data between the element and the EDP device, and a second interface formed by contacts on the user card and on the frame, for transferring data to and from the user card. The exterior form of the frame is that of a diskette so that it can be inserted into a diskette station of an EDP device. The first interface between the element and the EDP device is designed in a standard fashion, so that data can be transferred using a standard read/write device already present in the diskette station of the EDP device. The frame carries a battery for supplying current via the interface to the components located on the user card, if required, and carries an additional processor and data memory for providing the element with additional processor and storage capacity.

Smart diskette device adaptable to receive electronic medium

An adapter which can be plugged into a floppy disk drive of a computer can receive a plurality of user insertable and removable memory modules therein and provide access to the memory modules by the computer for reading and/or writing thereto. The adapter has a frame having an exterior form designed to be insertable into a floppy drive and accommodate the plurality of modules. The frame houses interface circuitry for facilitating the transferring of data between the adapter and a read/write head of a floppy disk drive. The adapter provides a plurality of recesses with contacts for coupling with corresponding contacts of memory modules when inserted therein, providing a path for transferring data to and from the modules. The frame may also accommodate a battery and/or a generator/alternator and associated regulator circuitry,(see FIG.,) for supplying current to the adapter circuitry and the memory modules.

Multi-module adapter having a plurality of recesses for receiving a plurality of insertable memory modules

A pocket interface unit for a smart diskette. The smart diskette has a housing of the shape and size of a standard diskette, electrical contacts and/or a magnetic transducer, an activation switch, and further has an interface, a processor and memory disposed in the housing and operatively coupled to the electrical contacts/magnetic transducer. The interface unit includes a frame adapted to removably attach to the smart diskette housing, electrical contacts and/or magnetic transducer for engaging corresponding electrical contacts and/or magnetic transducer on the smart diskette, a switch operating mechanism for operating an activation switch on the smart diskette when the smart diskette is attached to the frame, a display operatively coupled to the electrical contacts and/or magnetic transducer, for displaying text and/or graphical data under control of the smart diskette, and a plurality of user actuatable keys, operatively coupled to the electrical contacts and/or magnetic transducer, for facilitating user input of data under the control of the smart diskette. The pocket interface unit thereby provides a user interface with the smart diskette.

Transfer device for transferring data between an electronic data

An insertable device, for use with electronic data processing equipment data transfer units, e.g., disk drives or cassette units. The device includes a housing for insertion into the electronic data processing equipment data transfer unit designed to fit the data transfer unit, an interface disposed in the housing for facilitating the transfer of data between the device and the electronic data processing equipment, and a processor disposed in the housing and operatively connected to the interface, for performing processing of data.

Smart-diskette read/write device having fixed head

An insertable element for the diskette or cassette station of a piece of electronic data processing equipment having an interface. The arrangement is such that data transmission between the EDP equipment and the element can be carried out through write/read devices which already exist in the EDP equipment. The element has a component which, in the inserted condition, is outside of the EDP equipment and itself is comprised of the EDP components and/or of the EDP devices and/or is constructed as a device to connect further EDP devices. According to another feature, a process for operating the EDP device with this insertable element is carried in such a way that the entire PC operating system and further programs are stored and at the commencement are loaded from there.
