An improved apparatus and method of having a pair of end caps on a rotor assembly of a multi-pole high-speed generator is provided for use with a turbine engine. The rotor assembly provides improved balancing and/or cooling during generator operation. The rotor assembly includes a plurality of poles and at least one support wedge positioned between each of the poles. The rotor assembly is mounted on a shaft. An annular flange of the end caps restrains the support wedges in the rotor assembly for improved balancing and maintaining concentricity. The end caps may also include a manifold for circulating a cooling medium through the shaft to and from the support wedges to cool the generator.

Method of assembling a balanced high speed generator rotor

A rotor and a method of constructing a rotor are disclosed. The rotor includes a hub that is capable of being supported by a shaft that extends along an axis, a plurality of laminations, and a plurality of wire windings supported by the plurality of laminations. The hub includes an inner structure configured to support the hub relative to the shaft, an outer structure that supports the laminations, and an intermediate structure that is coupled to the inner and outer structures and supports the inner and outer structures relative to one another.

Rotor assembly method

A rotor with wedges and a method of retaining wedges in a rotor are disclosed. The rotor includes a shaft, first and second poles extending radially from the shaft, and first and second coils of windings respectively wrapped around the first and second poles. Each coil includes a respective outer face including two end portions and two side portions, and a respective inward-facing edge including two end sections and two side sections. The rotor further includes a first outer wedge positioned between neighboring side portions of the first and second coils, and a first inner wedge positioned between neighboring side sections of the first and second coils. The first inner wedge is coupled to the first outer wedge so that the first outer wedge is at least partly retained from moving radially outward away from the shaft.

System and method for retaining wedges in a rotor

A system and method for electrically coupling windings of a main generator rotor to a plurality of DC sources on an exciter that each have respective first-voltage and second-voltage terminals is disclosed. The system includes first and second conductive plates supported by the rotor that respectively define first and second apertures that surround a rotor shaft. The first plate includes a first rotor winding terminal by which the plate is electrically coupled to the windings, and a first plurality of terminals configured to be respectively coupled to the first-voltage terminals of the DC sources. The second plate is electrically insulated from the first plate, includes a second rotor winding terminal by which the second plate is electrically coupled to the windings, and includes a second plurality of terminals configured to be respectively coupled to the second-voltage terminals of the DC sources.

A lubricating and cooling system for a high speed generator that directs a lubricating and cooling medium through the generator housing. The lubricating and cooling medium may be supplied to the generator on either end of the housing. A portion of the medium is supplied to the generator bearings. The remaining portion then flows through the rotor shaft, through the rotor, back to the shaft, where a portion may be sprayed onto the rectifier assemblies, then passed through the stator, and out of the generator.

A multi-pole high speed generator includes a rectifier module assembly that is dimensioned to be mounted within the hub of a high speed generator exciter armature includes a rectifier module assembly includes a substantially flat base that has a plurality of conductive circuit runs formed on it, and which is dimensioned to be mounted within a hub of the exciter. A first diode circuit, which includes an anode and a cathode, has its anode electrically coupled to a first of the plurality of conductive circuit runs. A second diode circuit, which also includes an anode and a cathode, has its cathode electrically coupled to a second of the plurality of conductive circuit runs. A conductive element electrically couples together the cathode of the first diode circuit and the anode of the second diode circuit.

Multi-pole high speed generator with a modular rectifier circuit

A two-sided hermetically sealed package of a metal matrix composite material includes a heat sink and integral cooling fins on each of the two sides which are totally enclosed to retain cooling fluid. Power semiconductors are mounted on ceramic substrates having metallic conductors mounted on both sides thereof. The substrates are mounted to the heat sinks. Cooling is provided by the passage of cooling fluid into one end of the enclosed fins, over the fins and out the other end. The metal matrix composite material and the ceramic are thermally matched and the package is provided with a minimum number of thermal interfaces.

Packaging arrangement for power semiconductor devices

A disconnection coupling (11) is provided for installation between the input shaft (41) of an accessory and an engine to which the accessory is mounted. An input member (20) of the coupling (11) is connected to the engine in lieu of the accessory's input shaft (41). This provides engine power to the input member which can be selectively transferred to the accessory's input shaft. An intermediate member (30) is rotationally connected to an output member (40) which, in turn, receives the accessory's input shaft (41). The intermediate member (30) is able to be axially displaced with respect to the output member (40), while a spline joint (35) maintains the rotational connection between the intermediate and output members (30, 40). A release ring (47) and a braking spring (55) cooperate to cause a sleeve (57) to apply braking force and to axially displace the intermediate member (30) in order to disconnect the curvic coupling (29) and consequently disengage the accessory's input shaft (41) from the input member (20). When the release ring (47) is moved to a position to allow connection of the curvic coupling (29), a solenoid (69) normally latches the release ring (47) in that position.

Means for assembling ferromagnetic stators of rotating electric machines to housings made of lightweight alloys where high temperature operation causes loss of interference fit between stator and housing. Keys are equally spaced about the housing and are spring loaded with Belleville-type springs to maintain adequate centering forces on the stator at high temperature.

A silicon controlled rectifier has a triangular base with a planar mounting surface and holes at the apices of the angles to receive screws for mounting the rectifier to a heat sink surface. An anode ring having a skirt is threaded to a flange on the base and a semiconductor pellet is positioned on the base within the flange. A spring loaded cathode tube is positioned coaxially within the anode ring in engagement with the semiconductor pellet and a spring loaded gate is positioned coaxially within the cathode tube in engagement with the pellet to pressure mount the pellet on the base. A predetermined torque is applied to the anode ring when assembling it to the base to provide an accurate, predictable load on the pellet.

A cylindrical anode is connected to the base and a semiconductor pellet is positioned on the base within the cylindrical anode. A spring loaded cathode tube is positioned coaxially within the cylindrical anode in engagement with the semiconductor pellet and a spring loaded gate is positioned coaxially within the cathode tube in engagement with the pellet to pressure mount the pellet on the base.
