High power optical disc drives are disclosed. The drives are configured to deliver laser energy having a power of at least about 25 mW as measured at DVD 1&#xd7; write speed upon first contact with the surface of an optical disc.

High power optical disc drives

Optical information media containing encapsulated data layers are disclosed. Selective layering of materials in inner radial, middle radial, and outer radial zones allows for the faces and edges of at least the data layers to be encapsulated by other materials, resulting in increased resistance to harmful environmental agents such as oxygen and moisture.

Optical data storage media containing an encapsulated data layer

Optical information media containing a metal material layer and a carbon material layer are disclosed. The layering of the metal material layer and the carbon material layer are designed to reduce or eliminate problems associated with oxidation and berm formation during writing of data to the media.

A wire-grid polarizer includes a wire-grid layer disposed over a substrate. A plurality of contiguous dielectric-grid layers are contiguous with one another and disposed directly on top of the wire-grid layer. The plurality of contiguous dielectric-grid layers includes different materials with different indices of refraction. The array of dielectric material elements and the array of metal elements are oriented substantially parallel with one another, and the arrays having substantially equal periods.

A selectively absorptive, mulitlayer wire-grid polarizer for polarizing incident light includes a stack of thin film layers disposed over a substrate, including a wire-grid array of elongated metal elements having a period less than half the wavelength of the light. One of the layers can include a thin film layer with a refractive index greater than a refractive index of the substrate. One of the thin film layers can include a dielectric array of non-metal elements. One of the layers includes a material that is optically absorptive to the incident light.

A multilayer wire-grid polarizer for polarizing light includes a stack of thin film layers disposed over a substrate, including a wire-grid array of elongated metal elements having lengths longer than a wavelength of the light and a period less than half the wavelength of the light. One of the layers can include a thin film layer with a refractive index greater than a refractive index of the substrate. One of the thin film layers can include a dielectric array of non-metal elements.

A polarization device includes an optical stack with a diffraction grating and a wire grid polarizer with one disposed over the other. The wire grid polarizer includes an array of elongated, parallel conductive wires in accordance with P&#x3c;&#x3bb;/2 where Pis the period of the wires and &#x3bb; is the wavelength of the light. The diffraction grating includes an array of elongated parallel dielectric ribs in accordance with P&#x3e;&#x3bb;/2 where Pis the period of the ribs.

Polarization device to polarize and further control light

A high strength window for a radiation detection system includes a plurality of intersecting ribs defining a grid having openings therein with tops of the ribs terminate substantially in a common plane. The intersecting ribs are oriented non-perpendicularly with respect to each other and define non-rectangular openings. The window also includes a support frame around a perimeter of the plurality of intersecting ribs, and a film disposed over and spanning the plurality of intersecting ribs and openings. The film is configured to pass radiation therethrough. An associated radiation detection system includes a sensor disposed behind the window. The sensor is configured to detect radiation passing through the high strength window.

X-ray window with grid structure

A window for a radiation detection system includes a frame with an aperture therein configured to receive radiation therethrough. A plurality of silicon ribs span the aperture and are carried by the frame. A coating substantially envelopes each of the plurality of silicon ribs. A thin film covers the aperture and is carried by the plurality of silicon ribs and is configured to pass radiation therethrough.

Multilayer wire-grid polarizer

An optical system and method for providing a visible light beam with a desired characteristic includes a visible light source producing a visible light beam defining an optical train. An optical element is disposed in the optical train to create a modified beam, and that is capable of introducing an undesired characteristic that continuously transitions across at least a portion of the modified beam. A wire-grid polarizer is disposed in the optical train, and has a plurality of elongated elements with at least a portion that continuously transitions to a different characteristic. The wire-grid polarizer is positioned and oriented in the optical train with the different characteristic corresponding to the undesired characteristic of the modified beam to obtain a visible light beam with a desired characteristic substantially across the visible light beam.

Method and apparatus for correcting a visible light beam using a wire-grid polarizer

An image projection system has a wire grid polarizing beam splitter which functions as both the polarizer and the analyzer in the system. A light source produces a source light beam directed at the beam splitter which reflects one polarization and transmits the other. A liquid crystal array is disposed in either the reflected or transmitted beam. The array modulates the polarization of the beam, encoding image information thereon, and directs the modulated beam back to the beam splitter. The beam splitter again reflects one polarization and transmits the other so that the encoded image is either reflected or transmitted to a screen. The wire grid polarizing beam splitter is capable of being oriented at various incident angles with respect to the source light beam and modulated beam, and accepts relatively divergent light.

A polarizing device, such as a wire-grid polarizer, includes a substantial mono-layer of a corrosion inhibitor without adversely affecting the optical properties of the polarizing device. The polarizing device can include an optical element and a nano-structure, such as an array of a plurality of spaced-apart, elongated elements disposed on a substrate. The corrosion inhibitor is chemically bonded to surfaces of the elements to form the mono-layer. The mono-layer can have a thickness less than 100 Angstroms. A method of forming the substantial mono-layer can include treating the polarizing device with an amino phosphonate, such as a nitrilotris (methylene) triphosphonic acid.

Corrosion resistant wire-grid polarizer and method of fabrication

An image projection system includes one or more wire grid polarizing beam splitters and one or more transmissive arrays. A polarized light beams from a light source and pre-polarizer is directed towards the transmissive array which modulates the polarization of the polarized light beam by selectively altering the polarization of the polarized light beam to encode image information thereon and creating a modulated beam. The modulated beam is directed towards the wire grid polarizing beam splitter which acts as an analyzer to separate the modulated beam into reflected and transmitted beams. A screen is disposed in one of the reflected or transmitted beams to display the encoded image information. The polarizing beam splitter is oriented at an angle with respect to the modulated beam such that the reflected beam is directed away from the transmissive array. A plurality of transmissive arrays can be used for different colors. One or more polarizing beam splitters can act as both analyzers and combiners.
