A computer-implemented diabetes management system is provided that supports enhanced security between a diabetes care manager in data communication with a medical device. The diabetes care manager includes: a first application that operates to request access to a first security role supported by the medical device, where the first security role is associated with a first set of commands for accessing data on the medical device that are defined as a private extension of the communication protocol; and a second application that operates to request access to a second security role supported by the medical device, where the second security role is associated with a second set of commands for accessing data on the medical device that are defined as a private extension of the communication protocol. The second set of commands has one or more commands that are mutually exclusive from the first set of commands.

Coexistence of multiple radios in a medical device

A method performed by a medical device for transmitting data packets includes: removing select data fields from a data packet defined in accordance with IEEE standard 11073 to form a modified data packet; determining a length of the modified data packet; determining whether the length of the modified data packet is greater than a predetermined maximum length of data packets under the Bluetooth low energy protocol, as defined in Bluetooth Core Specification version 4.0 or higher; when the length of the modified data packet is greater than the predetermined maximum length of data packets defined under the Bluetooth low energy protocol, partitioning the modified data packet into a plurality of individual data packets, wherein each of the individual data packets includes a portion of the modified data packet; and transmitting the individual data packets via an antenna in accordance with the Bluetooth low energy protocol.

Low energy wireless communication systems and methods for medical devices

A diabetes management system is provided that employs a communication protocol with enhanced security. The diabetes management system includes: a medical device operable to perform a diabetes care function in relation to a patient and store data related to the operation thereof; and a diabetes care manager in data communication with the medical device using a communication protocol defined in accordance with IEEE standard 11073. The diabetes care manager is able to request access to a given security role supported by the medical device, where the given security role is associated with a set of commands that are defined as a private extension of the communication protocol.

Within this context, a diabetes management system for configured to allow pass thru communication is described. A pass-thru module of the diabetes management device uses a set of pass-thru commands for establishing a pass-thru communication path and enabling communication between the external computing device and the first medical device, and wherein the set of pass-through commands is defined in compliance with a communication protocol defined in accordance with IEEE standard 11073-20601.

Secure transmission comprises the following steps or means: providing a password in the device, receiving the password in the a additional device separate from the data communication link, selecting one of the independent transmission channels, encrypting the channel identification of the selected independent transmission channel using the received password in the additional device, transmitting the encrypted channel identification from the additional device to the device via the data communication link and decrypting the encrypted channel identification in the device, providing a session key in the device and the additional device and transmitting encrypted electronic data between the device and the additional device via the independent transmission channel.

A computer-implemented diabetes management system is provided for configuring a structured collection procedure implemented on a collection device having a meter that measures the concentration of glucose in blood. An electronic device may communicate wirelessly with another electronic device. The first and second processors may each be configured to exchange information with the memory device separately and independently of the exchange of information by the other of the first and second processors with the memory device.

Device and methods for optimizing communications between a medical device and a remote electronic device

A method for authenticating a medical device and a remote electronic device may include generating a PIN code by one device, capturing the generated PIN code with the other device, checking authentication of the PIN code, which is based at least in part on the captured PIN code, by the one device, generating a strong key by the one device, sending the strong key encrypted to the other device, checking authentication of the sent strong key by the one device, and upon successful authentication, storing the strong key in a memory of the one device and the other device. The roles of the medical device and the remote electronic device may be reversed in the authenticating method. The authenticating method may be preceded by a pairing process and/or followed by a binding process.

An electronic device may remotely control a medical device. The electronic device may include a wireless communication circuit configured to wirelessly communicate with the medical device, and a processor that receives from the medical device via the wireless communication circuit screen data generated by the medical device for display on a display device thereof and to control a display device of the electronic device according to the received screen data to display on the electronic device display the screen data generated by the medical device, to emulate at least some of a plurality of user keys of the medical device with selected ones of a plurality of user buttons of the electronic device, and to control the display device of the electronic device to display a map that relates emulated ones of the plurality of user keys to selected ones of the user buttons.
