A method and apparatus is disclosed for receiving a helical formation of rings free falling from the delivery end of a conveyor and for gathering the rings into an upstanding cylindrical coil, The free falling rings encircle a vertically disposed guide and are supported initially on elevated intercepting elements. The interceptor elements are gradually lowered past a coil plate onto which the accumulated rings are transferred. The coil plate is then lowered to accommodate continued formation of the coil, and the intercepting elements are returned to their elevated position.

Coil forming apparatus and method

A rolling mill reforming station has an annular chamber into which rings are dropped to acmmulate in coil form. A curved guide member projects downwardly from a rotating support into the path of ring descent. The guide member is readily removable from in addition to being adjustable in relation to the rotating support.

In a rolling mill, a reforming chamber is positioned to receive rings of hot rolled steel rod descending along a vertical path from the delivery end of a conveyor onto a support on an underlying carrier. The carrier has an upstanding stem around which the rings accumulate to form a cylindrical coil. First, interceptor elements operate above the carrier to interrupt the descent of rings, and second interceptor elements supported on the carrier beneath the first interceptor elements operate to subdivide the coil being formed around the stem into upper and lower segments, with a gap therebetween occupied by the second intercepting elements.

An auxiliary coil plate is mounted on and vertically adjustable with respect to the conventional elevator platform. The coil plate is designed to be raised into the coil forming chamber well above the level of the shear mechanism. By so doing, the ring free fall distance is beneficially reduced at an early stage in the coil formation cycle when the bottom most rings are being deployed.

A rolling mill reforming station has an annular chamber into which rings are dropped to accumulate in coil form. A guide member is rotated about a circular path surrounding the path of ring descent. The guide member has a three dimensionally curved guide surface configured in the general shape of a plow share which distributes the descending rings around the circumference of the accumulating coil.

A pouring reel has a rotatable tube with a bottom and an upstanding cylindrical side wall open at the top. Pin members are arranged in a circular row concentrically within the side wall. The pin members are pivotally adjustable between vertical positions cooperating with the tub side wall to define an annular coil forming chamber, and inoperative positions inclined inwardly from the side wall. Pivotal adjustment of the pin members from their inoperative to their operative positions is achieved by inserting a carrier into the tub. The carrier has a base which extends across and forms the bottom of the coil forming chamber, and a central core which carries contact membrs arranged to urge the pin members into their operative positions.
