Disclosed is a photographic element having a reduced rate of crystal formation comprising a silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith:

Coupler dispersions comprising an aqueous medium having dispersed therein an organic phase comprising (i) a primary photographic coupler comprising a first ballasting group containing at least 5 carbon atoms and (ii) an auxiliary photographic coupler comprising a second ballasting group, wherein the primary coupler and the auxiliary coupler are present in the dispersion at a weight ratio of from 4:1 to 99:1 and the auxiliary coupler differs from the primary coupler solely in that the second ballast group contains 2 or more additional carbon atoms and associated hydrogen atoms relative to the first ballasting group. Such dispersions are substantially free from crystallization on melt holding or on cold storage, provide direct dispersions without such crystallization problems, provide cost or performance improvements by minimizing the proportion of auxiliary coupler needed to eliminate crystallization problems, and provide photographic materials of improved coatability, of lower cost, or of improved performance.

Blends of couplers with homologous ballasts

Solid particle dispersions of compounds useful in imaging elements can be made with substantially improved stability to particle growth by dispersing the compound of interest in the presence of a relatively small amount of a second compound that is structurally similar to the compound of interest. This second compound is combined with the compound of interest prior to dispersing the compound of interest, i.e., prior to milling in the case of milled dispersions, and prior to precipitation in the case of pH or solvent precipitated dispersions. While being distinct, the second compound has a similar chemical structure to the main compound. More specifically, the second compound and first compound each comprise an identical structural section thereof which makes up at least 75% of the total molecular weight of the first compound, and the second compound has at least one substituent bonded to the identical structural section which has a molecular weight higher than the corresponding substituent of the first compound. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the compound useful in imaging elements is a compound useful in photographic or thermal transfer printing elements, and the resulting stabilized dispersion is used in preparing a photographic or thermal transfer printing element.

Solid particle dispersions for imaging elements

This invention describes the coprecipitation of nanoparticulate pharmaceutical agent dispersion via a process that comprises the dissolution of the said pharmaceutical agent in combination with a crystal growth modifier (CGM) in an alkaline solution and then neutralizing the said solution with an acid in the presence of suitable surface-modifying surface-active agent or agents to form a fine particle dispersion of the said pharmaceutical agent, followed by steps of diafiltration clean-up of the dispersion and then concentration of it to a desired level. This process of dispersion preparation leads to microcrystalline particles of Z-average diameters smaller than 400 nm as measured by photon correlation spectroscopy. Various modification of precipitation schemes are described, many of which are suitable for large-scale manufacture of these agent dispersions. It has been discovered that coprecipitation with CGM leads to smaller particle size compared to a case where precipitation is carried out using the pharmaceutical agent alone. Thus, this dispersion of instant invention is expected to have greater bioavailability. The CGM compound is a compound that has at least about 75% of its chemical structure identical to that of the pharmaceutical agent.
