A soot sensor and method for detecting soot is provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a sensing element for a soot sensor is disclosed herein, the sensing element having a pair of peripheral edge sensing electrodes each having a portion disposed on a peripheral edge of a non-conductive substrate of the sensing element; a first pair of side sensing electrodes disposed on a first side of the sensing element, the first side having a first area partially bounded by the peripheral edge, wherein a resistance between the pair of peripheral edge sensing electrodes decreases as soot accumulates on portions of the pair of peripheral edge sensing electrodes and a resistance between the first pair of side sensing electrodes decreases as soot accumulates on portions of the first pair of side sensing electrodes.

Soot sensor and method for sensing soot

A method of manufacturing an exhaust temperature sensor is disclosed. It includes forming a green ceramic substrate; and printing an electrical circuit on the green ceramic substrate. The method then contemplates trimming the electrical circuit to a predetermined resistance prior to firing the green ceramic. Finally, the method contemplates firing the green ceramic substrate with the electrical circuit thereon.

A NOsensor material includes a composition of BaAFeBO. Constituent A and constituent B are doping elements. Constituent A is selected from the group consisting of Bi, La and Pb and X is a real number where 0&#x2266;X&#x3c;1. Constituent B is selected from the group consisting of Al, B, Bi, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Er, Ga, In, Mg, Mn, Ni, Nb, Rh, Pb, Si, Sr, Ti, Ta, Zn and Zr and Y is a real number where 0&#x2266;Y&#x3c;12. The NOsensor material may be used in a sensor element of a NOsensor.

A sensor element can comprise a co-fired heater section, a sensing section, and a third insulating layer disposed between the electrode portion and the temperature sensor. The heater section can comprise a heater, a shield, and a temperature sensor, with a first insulating layer disposed between the heater and the shield, and a second insulating layer disposed between the shield and the temperature sensor. The sensing section can comprise an electrode portion and a sensing portion, wherein the sensing portion is disposed on a side of the electrode portion opposite the heater section.

Ammonia sensor element, heater, and method for making the same

A sensor comprises: a pump cell comprising an inner pump electrode, an outer pump electrode, a pump cell electrolyte layer interposed between the inner pump electrode and the outer pump electrode and a cell isolation layer disposed on the inner pump electrode on a side opposite the pump cell electrolyte, wherein the outer electrode is in fluid communication with a reducing gas. A reference cell is in operable communication with the pump cell, the reference cell comprising an outer reference electrode and an inner reference electrode, and a reference cell electrolyte interposed between the outer reference electrode and the inner reference electrode. A diffusion limiting material flanks both sides of a chamber formed between the cell isolation layer and a cell separation layer, wherein the cell separation layer comprises a via coaxial and in fluid communication with the inner pump electrode, the diffusing limiting material, and the outer reference electrode, and wherein the diffusion limiting material has a gas permeability such that the limiting current of oxygen in air is about 0.05 mA to about 5 mA per cmof pump electrode area.

In one embodiment, a method for forming the sensor comprises: disposing capacitance electrodes and a heater on green layers; disposing the layers such that the capacitance electrodes are disposed between adjacent green layers and the heater is disposed on a side of a green layer opposite one of the capacitance electrodes; disposing a gap insert in physical contact with the capacitance electrodes, wherein the gap insert has a higher sintering temperature than the green layers; sintering the green layers; and removing the gap insert.

Oxygen sensing device

A gas sensor for sensing NO having electrochemical cells wherein dielectric material surrounds electrolytes except where electrodes are attached. Thereby, the exhaust gas is effectively prevented from contacting the electrolytes of the sensor's electrochemical cells. With the use of this technique, signal cross talk is minimized while enhancing NOx sensing sensitivity. Further, the total number electrodes needed are reduced which allows for more complex sensors structures.

Exhaust species sensing method and device

The method of making a wide range oxygen sensor of the present invention enables ease of handling and processing, particularly in a mass production environment. This process comprises forming planar composite elements of the sensor where the elements are individually laminated. These laminated composites are easily handled and readily stacked. Furthermore, electrodes and electrode leads can be readily deposited on the laminated composites, across the intersection of the various materials forming the composite. After deposition of the electrodes, leads, and a heater, the elements are stacked accordingly and laminated to produce the oxygen sensor.

Method for making a wide range sensor element

Disclosed herein is a planar exhaust gas sensor for sensing the partial pressure of a gas in an exhaust. The sensing element has a modified, non-rectangular overall geometry. A terminal end of the element, onto which external sensor circuits can be attached, has a larger width than a sensor end of the element, in which is located the sensing cell. The reduced size of the sensor end of the element relative allows for more rapid attainment of operating temperature and lower energy consumption.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus and process for punching and placing inserts of electrolyte and other material into a substrate layer for a gas sensor. The insert can be the solid electrolyte, porous electrolyte or protective layer of a gas sensor. The substrate material is typically alumina. The apparatus punches a hole in the alumina substrate, and then, in one step, punches an insert of a second material, such as a solid electrolyte, into the previously formed hole, thereby forming a composite layer/insert.

A process for assembling a porous ceramic coating to a substrate comprising: forming a ceramic matrix tape including a first ceramic powder having a first full density sintering temperature, a second ceramic powder having a second full density sintering temperature and a fugitive filler material; placing the ceramic matrix tape on the substrate; and heating the ceramic matrix tape and substrate to a sintering temperature above the first full density sintering temperature and below the second full density sintering temperature, wherein the fugitive filler material decomposes during said heating.

Disclosed are electrorheological fluids having ceramic particles of high ion conductivity and a nonconducting or dielectric fluid. The high ion conductive particle may be a material having the formula A.sub.1+x Zr.sub.2 Si.sub.x P.sub.3-x O.sub.12, where A is a monovalent ion, such as a material comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Ag and Cu; and x ranges from 0 to 3. The liquid phase may include a silicone fluid or mineral oil. In the case of a mineral oil, the oil may also include an amine-terminated polyester to improve stability of the fluid.
