A mechanical assembly includes a shaft having a central axis and an outer member having a bore disposed about the shaft, either the shaft or the outer member having a gland defined by a circumferential surface and at least one radial surface and the other one of the shaft and the outer member being angularly displaceable about the central axis. A seal has an annular body disposed within the gland and is formed of an flexible material, preferably a plastic or elastomeric material, the annular body having a main body portion with inner and outer radial ends. An inner sealing lip extends radially inwardly from the inner end of the main body portion and is configured to engage with the shaft. An outer sealing lip extends radially outwardly from the outer radial end of the main body portion and is configured to engage with the outer member.

A slewing bearing includes an inner annular body formed of unhardened stainless steel and coupleable with a fixed member and having an inner race with an unhardened race surface. An outer annular body is disposed about the inner body and is formed of unhardened stainless steel, is coupleable with a rotatable member, and has an outer bearing race with an unhardened race surface and a plurality of gear teeth engageable by a drive pinion to angularly displace the outer body. Rolling elements are disposed between and rotatably couple the inner and outer annular bodies. An annular seal is coupled with the outer annular body and has two opposing axial ends, an axial thickness defined between the ends, a sealing lip engageable with the inner body and an outside diameter and is sized such that the ratio of the outside diameter to the axial thickness is greater than fifty.

A cartridge seal for sealing a space between a housing and a rotatable shaft includes a rotary sealing member having an inner surface defining a bore for receiving the shaft and a circular outer flange extending radially outwardly from and circumferentially about a central axis, the outer flange having a radial sealing surface. A static seal assembly is disposed about the rotary member and includes an annular casing coupleable with the housing and an annular static sealing member disposed within the casing and having a radial sealing surface engageable with the rotary member sealing surface to form a sealing interface. A biasing member axially biases at least a portion of the static sealing member toward the rotary member flange. An annular collar is disposed within the casing and axially retains the rotary member within the casing such that the seal assembly is mountable on a shaft as a single unit.

Rotary cartridge seal with internal face-sealing surfaces

A seal assembly includes an annular static sealing member disposed within an annular channel in a housing or shaft. An annular dynamic sealing member is disposed coaxially within or about the static member and has a circumferential sealing surface engageable with the shaft or housing. An annular biasing member is disposed radially between the static and dynamic sealing members and is configured to bias the dynamic sealing member radially to maintain engagement of the sealing surface and the shaft or housing. The static member is configured to prevent relative angular displacement between the static and biasing members and the dynamic member is configured to prevent relative angular displacement between the dynamic and biasing members. As such, the dynamic sealing member, the biasing member and the static sealing member angularly displace within the channel as a single unit when torque above a particular magnitude is applied to the dynamic sealing member.
