Controlling the gas inlet flow rate and energy input to a fermentation reactor to maximize conversion of syngas by maximizing uptake of hydrogen into a medium relative to carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide based on determined volumetric mass transfer coefficients for hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.

Method improving producer gas fermentation

According to an embodiment, there is provided herein a system and method wherein knowledge of the syngas fermentation is combined with standard instrumentation to provide a stable control of gas supply to automatically poise the fermentation to provide both high conversion of CO and H, and high selectivity for production of ethanol. The control is based on an automatic feedback loop that corrects for operational imbalance and maintains a stable continuous fermentation required for commercial operation. In a further embodiment, feed of syngas to ethanol fermentation can be optimally controlled using the pH of the broth as the input variable for flow control of the gas. This concept will automatically maintain the correct supply of syngas to the fermentation, and provide stable operation at optimal rates.

System and method for feedback control of gas supply for ethanol production via syngas fermentation using pH as a key control indicator

A downdraft gasifier is disclosed. The gasifier includes a biomass section that accepts and stirs raw biomass materials, a pyrolysis and tar cracking section having an inner cylinder for receiving biomass and an outer surrounding cylinder for gases from the biomass, and a char gasification section for receiving biomass and gases from the pyrolysis and tar cracking section. The char gasification section provides a grating and scraper for passing gases and ash and retaining biomass for char gasification on the grate.

Downdraft gasifier with internal cyclonic combustion chamber

A novel clostridia bacterial species (, ATCC BAA-622, 'P11') is provided. P11 is capable of synthesizing, from waste gases, products which are useful as biofuel. In particular, P11 can convert CO to ethanol. Thus, this novel bacterium transforms waste gases (e.g. syngas and refinery wastes) into useful products. P11 also catalyzes the production of acetate.
