A real time non-volatile residue (NVR) monitor, which utilizes surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators to detect molecular contamination in a given environment. The SAW resonators operate at a resonant frequency of approximately 200 MHz-2,000 MHz which enables the NVR monitor to detect molecular contamination on the order of 10.sup.-11 g-cm.sup.-2 to 10.sup.-13 g-cm.sup.2. The NVR monitor utilizes active temperature control of (SAW) resonators to achieve a stable resonant frequency. The temperature control system of the NVR monitor is able to directly heat and cool the SAW resonators utilizing a thermoelectric element to maintain the resonators at a present temperature independent of the environmental conditions. In order to enable the direct heating and cooling of the SAW resonators, the SAW resonators are operatively mounted to a heat sink. In one embodiment, the heat sink is located in between the SAW resonators and an electronic circuit board which contains at least a portion of the SAW control electronics. The electrical leads of the SAW resonators are connected through the heat sink to the circuit board via an electronic path which prevents inaccurate frequency measurement.

A projector slide has eight possible orientations, only one of which is the correct one to project a properly oriented image. For an automatic orientator to work there must be a simple way to recognize any one of the eight orientations and decide how to place the slide in the correct orientation. A method and device is described here which accomplishes this task.

An apparatus for preventing the transmission of sound in an underwater medium. A resilient housing encloses at least two voids. A first void contains a compliant tube consisting of two T-shaped support structures, each T-shaped support structure supporting a free-bending span designed to resonate at a predetermined frequency. A second void contains a viscous liquid in which metal fibers are suspended. The resilient housing may be surrounded by a rigid cover material which may include means for fastening the apparatus to a surface. The viscous liquid dissipates sound. The compliant tube attenuates the sound waves and decreases the velocity of the sound waves, consequently decreasing the wavelength of the waves.

A device for gas detection through ion mobility segregation by mobility ranges includes a flow tube through which a sample of atmospheric air with possible contaminant gases flow. Ions formed of gases in the air and the possible contaminant gases are segregated by ion mobility range in either a first, second or subsequent electric field positioned along the flow tube. The ions are collected on an anode or cathode of each electric field. The ions of the gases striking an anode or cathode by charge transfer induce a detection current, the measure of which indicates the presence of gases of interest. A method for detecting a gas by ion mobility segregation is also described.

Method and apparatus for employing a plasma produced in a radio-frequency discharge to enhance electrostatic precipitation. The plasma is generated in an auxiliary gaseous stream, and the plasma is introduced into a primary fluid stream flowing toward or in an electrostatic precipitation zone. The plasma causes ionization of the auxiliary gaseous stream, and the ionized gaseous stream charges the particles in the primary fluid stream. The primary fluid stream in which the particles are entrained flows in a primary duct toward an electrostatic precipitator containing the precipitation zone. A plasma generator generates plasma in the auxiliary gaseous stream to cause ionization thereof; and a secondary duct conducts the plasma into the primary stream for charging particles in the primary fluid stream. The charged particles then flow in the primary fluid stream into the precipitator.

Apparatus and methods for detecting an incipient fire condition based on a shift in the size distribution of particles generated by a developing incipient fire condition. Particulate mass concentrations of at least two different particulate sizes are monitored and the ratio of the outputs from the sensing devices is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition. In another form of the invention, the rate of change of the ratio of the outputs from the monitoring devices is processed as an indication of an incipient fire condition.
