Intelligent safety disconnect switching methods and arrangements for PhotoVoltaic (PV) panels are disclosed. A switching device that is connected between a PV panel and a PV panel string detects a low current condition or an arc fault condition in the PV panel string. The switching device is automatically controlled to disconnect the PV panel from the PV panel string responsive to detection of the low current condition or the arc fault condition. Switching device control could also be responsive to a disconnect command. For example, such a command could be generated by a grid sensor responsive to determining that an inverter, to which the PV panel string is connected, is not connected to an electrical grid.

Intelligent safety disconnect switching

A circuit for use in a power converter includes a control circuit capable of detecting whether an AC voltage source is coupled to an input of the power converter, and whether the AC voltage source is uncoupled from the input within a first period of time. A control circuit is coupled to drive a switch in a first operating mode when the control circuit detects that the AC voltage source is coupled to the input, and drive the switch in a second operating mode when the control circuit detects that the AC voltage source is uncoupled from the input. The control circuit is capable of discharging a capacitance coupled between input terminals of the power converter to a SELV level through a discharge path and the switch within a second period of time. An RC time constant of the discharge path is less than or equal to one second.

Method and apparatus for implementing a power converter input terminal voltage discharge circuit

Power converter communications, including power converter communication methods and power converters that can communicate information, are disclosed. A control variable of a power converter is modulated, to modulate an output of the power converter for communicating information. Modulation of voltage or current on a circuit path to which the power converter is coupled could be detected, by another power converter, for example. Such modulation could be detected by sensors that are also used in controlling the power converter. Either or both of transmission and reception could therefore be provided without requiring any additional hardware at a power converter.

Power converter communications

A power converter includes an energy transfer element and a circuit coupled to the input of the power converter. The circuit includes a switch and a control circuit capable of detecting whether an AC voltage source is coupled to the input, or uncoupled from the input within a first predetermined time. The control circuit is coupled to drive the switch in a first operating mode when the AC voltage source is coupled, drive the switch in a second operating mode when the AC voltage source is uncoupled, and is capable of discharging a capacitance coupled between input terminals of the power converter to a threshold voltage level through a discharge path and through the switch within a second predetermined time. An RC time constant of the discharge path is less than or equal to one second and the threshold voltage level is less than or equal to ten volts.

A first switch for connection in a first circuit path between a PV panel string and an inverter in a power system, and a second switch for connection in a second circuit path across an output of the PV panel string, are normally closed and open, respectively, during non-fault operation of the power system. Both series and parallel arc faults in the power system can be extinguished by further control of the switches. Arc fault detection could be based on probabilistic frequency analysis of current or power flow measurements in the PV panel string, current or power imbalance, interruption in communications with the PV panels, or combinations of these techniques.

ARC fault detection and extinguishing

An electrical power source includes a power converter and either an electrical generator or an electrical energy storage device. Power flow is controlled through control of the power converter based on a voltage source and resistance model of the electrical power source. A power converter for an electrical generator is controlled to synthesize a constant voltage of the voltage source and a variable value of the resistance. The resistance value is controlled to deliver a maximum available output power to the electrical microgrid over a range of microgrid voltages up to a voltage below a maximum allowable voltage of the electrical microgrid. For an electrical energy storage device, the power converter is controlled to synthesize a resistance value of the resistance that is dependent upon a phase angle between the voltage at the microgrid side of the electrical power source and current of the electrical energy storage device.

Distributed electrical microgrid control

A PhotoVoltaic (PV) panel switching arrangement includes a first switch and a second switch, which in some embodiments are in a DC converter. The first switch is to be coupled between a power system and a first end of a circuit path of the PV panel, and the second switch is to be coupled between (i) a point between the first switch and the power system and (ii) a point between a second end of the circuit path and the power system. The switches are controlled for DC conversion of PV panel output where the circuit path of the PV panel is not to be bypassed, and to disconnect the first end of the circuit path from the power system and to close a bypass circuit path that bypasses the circuit path on a determination that the circuit path of the PV panel is to be bypassed.

Photovoltaic bypass and output switching

A gateway controller allows a plurality of individual power generation units coupled to an electrical distribution grid to be controlled in a coordinated fashion. The gateway controller allows control of the plurality of individual power generation units as a single power generation unit. The gateway controller may determine required control parameters of the power generation units that will provide a desired combined behavior, such as combined alternating current injected into the grid, and issues commands to the power generation units based on the determined control parameters.

Virtual inverter for power generation units

Photovoltaic power system inverter detection apparatus and methods are disclosed. Electrical continuity between an inverter in a PV power system and a PV panel disconnect switch, which switchably couples one or more DC PV panels to the PV power system, is tested while the PV panel disconnect switch is open. A state of the electrical continuity is determined based on measurements of an electrical parameter after the test signal is applied. The PV panel disconnect switch is maintained open on determining no electrical continuity, and closed on determining that there is electrical continuity between the PV panel disconnect switch and the inverter. A shutdown device that implements inverter detection may be located and/or adapted to meet safety conditions, by being located less than 10 feet from the PV panel array and/or adapted to limit a test signal to a maximum of 30V and 240VA.

Photovoltaic power system inverter detection

A circuit for use in a power converter includes a control circuit coupled to detect whether an electrical energy source is coupled to an input of the power converter. A switch is coupled to the control circuit, and is coupled to transfer energy from the input of the power converter to an output of the power converter during a first operating mode. The control circuit is coupled to drive the switch in the first operating mode when the electrical energy source is coupled to the input of the power converter. The control circuit is coupled to drive the switch in a second operating mode when the electrical energy source is uncoupled from the input of the power converter to drive the switch to discharge a capacitance coupled between input terminals of the power converter to a threshold voltage in less than a maximum period of time.

The present disclosure relates to non-planar inductive electrical elements in semiconductor package lead frames. A non-planar inductive element is formed from a lead frame in a semiconductor package. The semiconductor package also includes at least one semiconductor die coupled to the lead frame. The non-planar inductive element could be formed by deforming portions of a patterned planar lead frame blank to form the non-planar inductive element in a deformed lead frame blank. The deformed lead frame blank and the at least one semiconductor die could then be packaged into a semiconductor package. A setting tool could be used to deform the lead frame blank. A configurable lead frame blank could be configurable into any of a variety of inductive elements, through interconnection of lead frame segments using wire bonds, for example.

Non-planar inductive electrical elements in semiconductor package lead frame

A PhotoVoltaic (PV) panel bypass switching arrangement includes first and second switches. The first switch is to be coupled between a power system and a first end of a circuit path of the PV panel in which PV cells are connected, and is controllable to connect the first end of the circuit path to a power system and to disconnect the first end of the circuit path from the power system. The second switch is to be coupled between (i) a point between the first switch and the power system and (ii) a point between a second end of the circuit path and the power system, and is controllable to open and close a bypass circuit path that bypasses the circuit path. The first and second switches are controlled based on a determination as to whether the circuit path of the PV panel is to be bypassed.

Photovoltaic bypass switching

One or more first switches coupled to one of a primary transformer winding and a secondary transformer winding are controlled based on a first switch control reference clock signal. A reflected voltage across the other of the primary and secondary windings is sensed, and a second switch control reference clock signal is synchronized to the first switch control reference clock signal based on the reflected voltage. One or more second switches coupled to the other of the primary and secondary windings are controlled based on the second switch control reference clock signal. A digital isolator could instead be used to transfer a switch control reference signal across an isolation boundary. Switch control signals for controlling a set of switches on one side of the isolation boundary may be derived from a switch control reference signal that is synchronized with the transferred switch control reference clock signal.

Switching synchronization for isolated electronics topologies

Inverter internal communication features are disclosed. A multiple-stage inverter includes DC to DC and DC to AC converter switches in different power domains, which share no common return path connection. Operating parameters for converter switches in both power domains are determined by a single controller, located in one of the power domains. Converter control signals are communicated from the controller across an interface between the power domains. Respective, separate controllers in each power domain are not required. Components on each side of the interface could be integrated into respective integrated circuits. A planar transformer implemented in wiring levels of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that carries components of the inverter could be provided to enable communications between the power domains while reducing component count and physical space requirements.

Internal inverter communications

Intelligent safety disconnect switching methods and arrangements for PhotoVoltaic (PV) panels are disclosed. A determination is made as to whether a reconnect condition, for reconnecting a PV panel to a power system from which the PV panel is disconnected, is satisfied. The PV panel is automatically reconnected to the power system responsive to determining that the reconnect condition is satisfied. A determination is then made as to whether a power system operating condition is satisfied on reconnection of the PV panel, and the PV panel is automatically disconnected from the power system responsive to determining that the power system operating condition is not satisfied on reconnection of the PV panel.
