The invention provides a method of detection of an imprint of a postal indicium at a location on a mail piece. The method involves utilizing a sensor to scan along a band on the mail piece to detect a sequence of transitions between light and dark reflectance areas within a band extending across the said location. AN indication of the presence of the imprint of the postal indication is generated in response to detection of a transition succeeding a predetermined number of initial transitions at a start of the sequence of transitions. The invention also provides apparatus for imprinting postal indicia on mail pieces. The apparatus comprises a printer operable to print a postal indicium in a required location on the mail piece. A first sensor is provided that is responsive to reflectance transitions between light and dark along a band of the mail piece extending across the said location. The first sensor generates a sequence of first signals corresponding respectively to reflectance transitions along the said band. The apparatus further includes means operative in response to a first signal occurring after a predetermined number of said first signals at a start of said sequence to generate a second signal which is indicative of a postal indicium imprint on the mail piece.

Printing of postal indicia and detection thereof

In a method of preparation of a series of mail items in which postal indicia are printed on the mail items when creating an indicium for a mail item after the first mail item, a determination is made as to whether an indicium created for a previous mail item in the series has not been used for example because the mail item was spoiled or removed. If a previously prepared indicium remains unused, a substitute indicium is created. The substitute indicium is a modification of the unused indicium and contains an indication that it is a substitute indicium.

Mail preparation system

An item handling system, comprising: at least one item preparation station for printing machine-readable symbols on items; and at least one item handling station for receiving items from the at least one item preparation station and being operable to machine read and process information contained in the symbols printed on the items; wherein: the at least one item handling station includes a messaging unit for generating messages representative of the readability of symbols read thereby and transmitting the messages to the at least one item preparation station; and the at least one item preparation station includes an indicator for providing an indication of a readability of symbols printed thereby in response to messages received from the at least one item handling station.

Item handling system

A method for printing on a smart card using the printer of a postage meter is disclosed. The postage meter has a feed mechanism for feeding mail items past a print head and the construction of the feed mechanism is such that the spacing of adjacent feed rollers is greater than the length of the smart card. As a result the feed mechanism is incapable of feeding smart cards. Therefore in the method a carrier is provided for the smart card, the carrier being of sufficient length as to be engaged by the feed rollers during feeding thereof. Preferably the carrier comprises a sheet having a recess therein to receive the smart card so that the print receiving surface of the smart card is approximately co-planar with the surface of the carrier sheet.

Method and apparatus for printing on smartcards and the like

A construction of packaging such as an envelope is disclosed that comprises a wall surrounding contents of the packaging and electrically conductive tracks extending over the wall. An electronic control device is mounted to the wall and includes a plurality of output ports to which one end of each conductive track is connected and an input port to which an opposite end of the conductive tracks are connected. The control device outputs from the output ports pulses which are distinguished from one another and monitors the input port for receipt of these pulses to provide an indication of integrity of the wall of the package.

Packaging provided with means to check integrity thereof

A tamper evidence device for a secure housing containing electronic circuits includes a zinc air cell and a bi-stable latch circuit connected to be powered by the cell. The zinc air cell requires a supply of oxygen for activation of the cell. Normally when the secure housing is intact and unbreached, a pad seals an aperture for ingress of oxygen to the cell and the cell does not generate any electrical power. However if the secure housing is opened or otherwise breached the pad is displaced and oxygen enters the cell and electrical power is generated to power the latch circuit and thereby set the bi-stable latch circuit to provide evidence of the breaching of the secure housing.

Tamper detection

A postage meter includes a printing device, for example an inkjet print head cartridge having an integral ink supply, removable from the postage meter by a user of the postage meter whereby a cartridge with a depleted ink supply can be replaced with a cartridge having a full ink supply. The printing device includes means storing a unique identification of the printing device. The postage meter includes reading means to read the unique identification of a printing device installed in the postage meter to determine from whether the printing device is authorized for use in the postage meter. The postage meter is operable to print postage indicia only if the printing device is authorized for use in the postage meter.

A secure communication system for transmission of messages utilizes postage meters as terminals of the system. The postage meters include means for input of postage amount, an encryptor to encrypt postage information to be printed by a printer of the meter. The input means are used for input of a message, the encryptor encrypts the message with a key unique for an intended recipient terminal and the printer prints the encrypted message on a mail item. The terminals also are provided with reading means to read a received encrypted message and the encryption means is utilized to decrypt the received encrypted message using the unique key of the recipient terminal.

Secure communication system with encrypted postal indicia

Postage indicia are printed on mail items using an ink having a characteristic such that the ink is rendered invisible when subjected to light or light and heat of sufficient intensity. When an attempt is made to copy the imprint of a postage indicia on a mail item for which proper accounting has been effected the imprint is subjected to a butst of light or light and heat and the ink becomes invisible and prevents copying of the imprint. The imprint of the postage indicium may overly and obscure a void mark which becomes visible and is copied in the event of attempting to copy the original authentic postage indicium.

Method and apparatus for printing and prevention of copying of postage

A postage meter includes a printing device including a removable ink supply carried by the printing device. The printing device is movable on a carriage over an area in which printing of a postage indicia is to be effected and is movable to a location beyond that area for the purpose of replacement of the ink supply. Access to the printing device to replace the ink supply is by means of a hatch in a housing of the postage meter. The printing device can be moved and from the location only when the hatch is locked closed and the construction of the carriage and the mounting thereon of the printing device is such as to inhibit access to electrical connections between the printing device and the postage meter.

Postage meter with removable print head

An ink jet printing device is disclosed in which a bore providing a nozzle for the ejection of droplets of ink is closed by a pin to prevent ejection of ink. The pin is movable into a retracted position in which the pin is withdrawn from the bore to permit ejection of droplets of ink from an ink chamber in communication with said bore. The pin is connected to a piston movable within a chamber. A spring acts on the piston to urge the pin into the bore. Withdrawal of the pin from the bore is effected by pressure of ink acting, against the spring force, on the piston. Ink is supplied selectively under pressure to the ink chamber from an ink supply. Alternatively the piston may be moved by selective application of positive and negative gaseous pressure in the chamber.

Ink jet printing device

Printing apparatus is disclosed for printing on articles of non-uniform thickness. The printing apparatus includes a thermal transfer print head to print on the article and the article is pressed toward thermal printing elements of the thermal print head by a line of individual impression rollers each individually resiliently biased toward the print head.

Thermal printing apparatus

Apparatus, for example postage metering apparatus is described as being provided with tamper detection means. The tamper detection means may comprise an electrically conductive or resistive first layer extending between a wall of a secure housing and components critical in the proper functioning of the apparatus. An indicator may include a second electrically conductive layer extending adjacent and electrically isolated from the first layer and means responsive to completion of an electrical path between the layers or means responsive to change in resistance of the resistive layer. In an alternative construction, the tamper detection means includes a sealed enclosed space containing gaseous substance at a pressure above ambient air pressure and means responsive to a decrease in the pressure in the space to permit a mechanical interposer to engage an operable mechanical element of the apparatus to inhibit operation thereof.

Thermal transfer printing apparatus is provided with a driven impression roller movable into an operative position to urge a print receiving medium into engagement with an ink layer of an ink transfer ribbon and the ribbon into heat transfer engagement with a thermal print head. Rotation of the impression roller feeds the ribbon and print receiving medium past the print head. A drive roller for a ribbon take-up drive is located so as to be engaged directly by the impression roller or by the print receiving medium when the impression roller is in the operative position so as to impart drive to the ribbon take-up.

Thermal transfer printing apparatus

A mail item is disclosed comprising a cover for carrying contents and formed of flexible electrically insulating material. The cover acts as a substrate on which semi-conductor elements and electrical connections are formed or deposited. The electronic circuit comprises semi-conductor elements interconnected to provide at least a memory and an interface to said memory and electrical connections are formed to be flexible. Mail handling apparatus is disclosed for communicating with the interface of the mail item and for writing information to and reading information from the memory via the interface.
