In one embodiment, a condition monitoring circuit can include a circuit controller and a node. The node can include a gate controller, a node controller and one or more gates. The node can be configured to detachably couple to a bus of a monitoring system associated with an industrial machine. The circuit controller can be configured to identify an operating parameter associated with the industrial machine. The gate controller can be configured to transfer, via the one or more gates, one or more data packets including data characterizing the operating parameter from the bus in the monitoring system. The one or more gates can be configured to prevent transfer of an outgoing data packet to the bus via the node.

Flexible condition monitoring of industrial machines

A diagnostic system is provided and includes a plurality of processors configured to receive data acquired by a sensor. A first processor can execute a safety function that determines a plurality of sensor measurement from the received data, compares selected sensor measurements to predetermined alarm set points, and determines a safety function output for the selected sensor measurements based upon the sensor measurement comparison. A second processor can determine a shadow function output corresponding to the safety function outputs during different respective portions a diagnostic interval. The shadow function output can be configured to replicate the safety function output under conditions where the safety function output is free from error. A third processor can be configured to validate the safety function output by comparing the safety function output to its corresponding shadow function output and outputting a condition based upon the validation comparison.

In one embodiment, a portable monitoring system can include a secondary bus and a first monitoring circuit detachably coupled to the secondary bus. The first monitoring circuit can be configured to receive, from a first bus via a node comprising one or more gates, a first beacon packet of a monitoring system of an industrial machine. The first beacon packet can include a first system frame schedule indicative of a plurality of time slices during which a plurality of data packets can be configured to be broadcasted on the first bus of the monitoring system. The first monitoring circuit can also be configured to determine, a first set of time slices of the plurality of time slices during which a first set of data packets including data characterizing one or more predetermined operating parameters are broadcasted on the first bus. The first monitoring circuit can be further configured to transfer the first set of data packets from the first bus to the first monitoring circuit by activating the one or more gates in the node during a first set of time slices of the plurality of time slices. The one or more gates are configured to prevent transfer of an outgoing data packet to the first bus.

Optical-based apparatus and method for sensing parameters in connection with an asset, such as a pipeline, are provided. At least two sites in an optical fiber may include a respective fiber grating arranged to have a respective optical response in a wavelength spectrum having a distinguishing feature indicative of a value of a respective local parameter at a respective grating site. The two fiber gratings may be further arranged to form, in combination with a respective portion of the optical fiber which extends between the two sites, respective optical backscatter portions that when combined with one another are effective to sense an optical change in the fiber portion between the sites indicative of a value of a distributed parameter. This is a parameter modality different from a parameter modality of the respective local parameters at the respective grating sites.

The system may generally include a plurality of wireless sensor nodes communicatively coupled to a plurality of sensing devices. The first plurality of instantaneous airgaps includes a first plurality of measurements of airgaps between the stator and the plurality of rotor poles when the rotor is rotating. The first instantaneous airgap and the second instantaneous airgaps include measurements for respective rotor poles.

A system and method for determining the location of wireless sensors are disclosed. The system may generally include a plurality of wireless sensor nodes communicatively coupled to a plurality of sensing devices. Additionally, the system may include a paging device configured to wirelessly transmit a page command to at least one of the wireless sensor nodes. Systems, methods, and apparatus for monitoring clearance in a rotary machine are provided. According to one embodiment of the invention, there is disclosed a method for monitoring clearance between a rotatable member and a stationary member in a rotary machine. The method may include providing a flex circuit capacitance sensor. The flex circuit capacitance sensor may include at least one capacitance sensing layer, at least one shielding layer adjacent to the capacitance sensing layer, at least one ground layer adjacent to the shielding layer, and a set of conducting leads connected to the capacitance sensing layer. Further, the method may include mounting the capacitance sensor between a portion of the rotatable member and a portion of the stationary member. Clearance may be determined between the rotatable member and the stationary member based at least in part on a capacitance indication from the capacitance sensor.
