The invention provides an internal electromagnetic shield that prevents the radiation of electromagnetic emissions from electro-optical components in high speed data transfer systems. The present invention provides an internal shield with at least one aperture to allow the connector portion of an electro-optic component to pass through for connection to an optical fiber. By providing an internal shield, electromagnetic interference (EMI) is substantially reduced without interfering with the mechanical connection between an electro-optical component and an optical fiber. The internal shield typically is formed of a thin metallic sheet having apertures to receive the connector portion of electro-optical components. In a shield for an input/output device, which includes an optical signal generator and optical signal receiver, the shield may include two bores.

Data transfer system incorporating optical fiber link module with internal electromagnetic shield

A redundant resistor matching detector is provided with constant percentage threshold. The redundant resistor matching detector includes a voltage reference and a first operational amplifier, a second operational amplifier, a first potentiometer and a reference potentiometer. The first operational amplifier has a first input connected to a first potentiometer. The second operational amplifier has a first input connected to the reference potentiometer. The first operational amplifier and the second operational amplifier have a reference input coupled to the voltage reference. An input current mirror is coupled to the first potentiometer providing a first current. A first reference current mirror is coupled to the reference potentiometer providing a reference current. A second reference current mirror has an input coupled to a first output of the first reference current mirror and has a first output coupled to an output of the input current mirror. A pair of series connected resistors are connected between a second output of both the first reference current mirror and the second reference current mirror. A resistor is connected between a junction of the pair of series connected resistors and the first outputs of the input current mirror and the second reference current mirror.

Optical fiber link module with internal electromagnetic shield

A method and apparatus are provided for laser safety. A fault detector detects laser fault conditions and generates a laser fault control signal. A laser fault counter is coupled to the fault detector for counting laser fault conditions and for generating a disable laser control signal responsive to a predetermined fault count. A reset timer is coupled to the laser fault counter for identifying a predetermined reset time period responsive to the laser fault control signal and applying a reset signal to the laser fault counter. Features of laser safety method and apparatus of the invention are that the laser fault counter is reset if a second laser fault condition is not detected within the predetermined reset time period after the laser is turned on. The disable laser control signal is not generated when a safe laser optical power condition occurs between two laser fault conditions.

Method and apparatus for laser safety

The invention provides a locking bail that when in the locked position prevents the removal of an optical link module from a host system and when in the unlocked position provides a handle that facilitates the removal of an optical link module. By providing a locking bail, the packing density of modules in a host may be increased. The bail provides a handle which is accessible from the front of the module when the module is unlocked. The locking bail typically engages inclined planes on latch arms that secure an optical link module to the host system.

Hot pluggable module integrated lock/extraction tool

A package for containing a high speed electronic assembly has a small physical size, shielding, pluggability, and is capable of operating at multigigabit transmission rates. The package includes a module and a cover which covers at least the top of the module. An optical assembly and a circuit packaging are inserted into the module. The package, with an appropriate cover, can be removed and inserted without disturbing other packages secured on the board. The circuit packaging is electrically connected to the board through bump connectors, while the circuit packaging itself supplies a normal force for insuring the bump connectors are in contact with the board. The package is attached to the board using an attachment member which is separate from the bump connectors. The bump connectors facilitate high speed transmission. Alignment pins may be used to improve mechanical stability, provide feedback indicative of proper insertion, and to prevent bump connectors from contacting the board until the module is properly positioned. Electromagnetic interference shielding may be provided in the cover. The cover and various components of the module serve as heat sinks for the module. The cover, the pattern of the bump connectors and the positioning of the alignment pins may be selected/altered by an end user without affecting the construction of the module.

Multigigabit adaptable transceiver module

A communications method and an optical fiber ring communications system including multiple devices or ports are provided. The optical fiber ring communications system includes first and second optical link modules (OLMs) coupled to each of the multiple ports. First and second optical fibers extend between adjacent ports in the ring communications system and are coupled at each end to one of the first and second OLMs. The first and second optical fibers define dual fiber channel arbitrated loops during normal operation in the system. If an optical fiber link is disconnected between two ports, then the communications system is configured as a single arbitrated loop. Alternatively, when the communications system includes a ruler port and subject ports, then the communications system can be configured as two separate loops coupled by the ruler port if an optical fiber link is disconnected between two ports. The ring communications system supports a large number of ports and the circumference of the ring can equal hundreds of kilometers.
